4.0L tune-up

I've searched thru some threads here, but came up with no good answer or opinion. Getting ready to tune-up my '96 XJ. Knowing that there's gotta be better stuff out there than the Autozone/Advance tune up parts out there, What premium parts do you run & how ya like 'em?

NAPA - Echlin parts. They sell cheaper off-shore-sourced stuff if you want it, but they still sell the better quality parts. You can order online if you don't have a store nearby.

I've been using the Bosch Platinum+2 spark plugs for years with no problems. They didn't make a dramatic performance increase, actually I couldn't tell any difference between them and regular plugs. But I like that I don't have to gap them and the idea of how they work and make a stronger spark makes sense to me. Kind of going along those same lines, a doctor once told me that basically all diet plans are the same, so if I want to eat chocolate cake then pick one that lets me, but if I want to quit drinking coffee then pick one that doesn't let me do that. Performance tune ups on cars are kind of the same I think, there are some that really do make a big difference, but on other stuff isn't usually worth the money. Like a cap and rotor and spark plug wires, there is the economy priced stuff, then there is the really really expensive stuff, but the performance gains are minimal.

One thing I do swear by though is oil additive. I can't remember what brand I get, but it comes in a small silver colored bottle. With it I notice that my engine temps stay a little lower and oil pressure stays right in the middle at idle, so thats something I always spend the extra couple bucks on each time I change my oil.

x2 on those parts. The distributor cap/rotors especially seem to last longer than the stuff I've gotten @ auto zone.

so I'm friends with the parts guy at the dealer so i get my stuff a little cheaper than the average Joe.But I have to recommend the dealer parts for ignition. cap, rotor, plugs and wires. there was a noticable differnce post swap.
I just spent $107.09 got tune up and oil filter, rear main, oilpan gasket. they sold me champion plugs.

The 4.0 loves plain good old copper plugs. The fancy ones don't seem to make any difference in performance.

Indeed. Been running normal champion plugs in mine since I bought it. Remember we're dealing with a tractor engine here. I not exactly sure the stock ignition is hot enough to get as good of a spark out of the platinum plugs as it does the copper.

The only real reason to run platinum plugs it to only have to change them every 60k instead of about 15k on the 4.0Ls.

when i do a full tune up heres the route ive taken. i may differ in the future but yea. here it is...

99 XJ 4.0 315,000 miles (so its proven to work)

champion plugs,
mobile one sythetic 10w-30
bottle of lucas oil heavy duty oil stabilizer with the oil (obviously)
seafoam (half in fuel tank half in TB or main vaccum depending on my mood)
just regular wires and autozone cap and rotor (may upgrade later but not worth it unless i go through the ignition system)
i want to change the injectors to Bosch injectors. they are MUCH more efficient. 4 holes instead of one. the spray is alot more atomized...
inflate tires,
clean up battery terminals,
fram air filter
carb cleaner to clean up the TB
fram tough guard oil filter
check fluid levels (wipers, brakes, power steering etc)

cant say that it hasnt held up. runs great minus the exhaust leak. between oil changes i run lucas oil fuel system treatment instead of seafoam every few fill ups. i go through alot of gas....18-19 mpg on average...after i rebuild and have everything done i want...should get around 20-21..hopefully.

One good thing is the larger oil filter upgrade, use a WIX 51515 or equivalent, it is bigger and holds more oil also more filtering medium inside.

I run the following
Mopar ignition components.
OEm Champion spark plugs
WIX oil filter
Rotella T 15W-40 But I live in AZ
Wix Air filter
Sea foam every couple of tanks
Stant super stat OEM 195 temp

I also did some other intake and exhaust mods that really woke the motor up.

Another vote for Champion plugs in a 4.0L

4.0L's are notorious for not running well on platinum plugs. There is a reason Mopar 'puters don't work well with platinum but it escapes me right now. .

A couple years ago my jeep would just die on me and not start back up. It turned out to be something in the fuel pump, but the official Chrysler mechanic said it was because of my spark plugs. He said Jeeps only work with champion plugs, and I thought he was full of ****. A spark plug is a spark plug is a spark plug, it does make sense to heed the manufacturers recommendations but does varying slightly from that really make that much of a difference?

just bought bosch injectors which will up the mpg 1-2. then im going to change back to champion plugs this weekend. also another thing to make it run better is to replace the main fan with a second auxillary fan. this gets you another 1-2 mpg and the engine is supposed to be a bit snappier. lil more power. as well as prolonging your water pumps life...

What was the part number for the Bosch Injectors?
