If it were me, I might give it one more coat of the epoxy. I’d want that extra layer of epoxy so I don’t accidentally sand through to the wood. When it’s all dry, I’d wet sand it all down until the surface is uniform. Then I’d use the HVLP with your primer and chosen single or two stage paint.
I just stumbled upon this thread and though it was an awesome idea! I bought one, but just finished my camper trailer build last year. I’m hoping to learn a thing or two for my next build, whether it’s a teardrop or not. Whenever that is!
I have a very similar story with my Rhino Rack: also origamied on the maiden voyage. Broke two hinges and actually snapped one of the horizontal pieces in half. I have and love the OVS now but I still guy and peg every time since that rhino rack experience.
I can appreciate your build. It’s a lot like mine that I built from scratch as well. Except I opted for the straight axel over Timbren because it was my first build. I’ll be following along!

I used this formula to calculate my axle location on my build. Factoring my battery on the tongue, 25gal water tank, etc, it put me within 2” of the 40/60 rule.
I ended up going with these people for my axle. I also wanted a width mirroring my Tacoma and I had it built for 31” wheels with the 6 lug pattern and brakes.

I feel like if you fixed that sketchy boat trailer tongue and how it attaches to the body and went with concept “e” or “L” the project is entirely workable.
As far as managing your tongue weight, is airbag suspension an option for the towing vehicle? Back Astro is empty and you already bottom...
