I was in Chad last year. You need govt permits to travel outside the capital, and you will struggle to get them without fixer or tour agency inside Chad.

What fighting are you refering to? Generalizing an entire continent is prolly not a great idea.

Nice, thanks for sharing. I was supposed to spend time in Chad last November, but pandemic requirements made it impossible.

Crossoverlanding Adventures - Death Valley, Hunter Mountains, and Saline Valley

Its absolutely doable in a Subaru. I've been up there with my Outback. People drive up there in BMW's, and all sorts of other ridiculous vehicles.

Nothing in this thread is discussing Saudi Arabia.

    Thirteen days in the Sahara

My tour was arranged with La Gueila Voyages ( http://lagueila.com ). Its also a guesthouse (auberge) in Chinguetti run by a French woman. I'd strongly discourage doubling back to Noakchott, as its a lot of extremely boring driving, and when you add in all the police checkpoints (expecting...

    Thirteen days in the Sahara

None of the wells that I saw had anyone 'manning' them. Some were near villages, where I guess someone might be caring for them, but nothing had a dedicated person. I never saw any modern architecture outside of the larger towns & cities. Doesn't mean it didn't exist, but seems unlikely that...

    Thirteen days in the Sahara

I've recently returned from spending time in the Sahara desert, the largest of this planet's many deserts. More specifically, I spent nearly 2 weeks exploring very remote corners of the nation of Mauritania. Some of you may be thinking, Mauri-what?? Mauritania doesn't get much attention...

    Two weeks exploring Namibia

The only stuff that I brought with me was clothing, electronics (phone, tablet & camera), water bottle, and some energy bars. The rental came with a plug kit & sleeping bags. There was no toilet system (i'm not sure why that's necessary anyway), nor shower system. Not sure what you mean...

    Two weeks exploring Namibia

Food & fuel aren't hard to find for the most part. It depends on how far from major towns you intend to travel. Since the majority of Namibia's road network is unpaved, I can't simply say "there's food & fuel as long as you're on an official road", because that's definitely not true...

    Two weeks exploring Namibia

Yes, it came with everything (other than, oddly, a can opener). This is what I rented: https://www.savannacarhire.com.na/car-rental/1400665738/Toyota-Hilux
