Will sound stupid but keep up the maintenance and replace the items that ware out.
I did go from a carbed 258 to a TBI fuel injection that worked well.

A few years before I took it out to Moab I had done basically a ground up rebuild on it.

I am in the process of bringing an '81 CJ8 back to life. My goal is to be able to make the trips like you mentioned all the way to Moab in my CJ. What have you done to yours to make it more dependable?
