Just bought this used 1998 Mercedes Benz Actros 2040 4x4 Expedition Rig and was wondering if anyone else out there has this kind of rig and would be willing to share their experience and information about the rig with me. Want to collect as much information as possible and know as much about the truck before I take it out on the world's roads. What mechanical problems should I be worried about? What parts should I carry with it? How do I get it to go faster than 55 mph and over come the throttle control? Anyone have the mechanic's manuals for the rig. What should I know and have!?IMG_9431.JPG

The speed limiter is mandatory for trucks >7.5t GVWR in Europe and is programmed into the ECU. With the truck being registered as RV you can have it reprogrammed by Mercedes, depending on tire speed index. The Conti HCS have a speed index of J (100km/h / 62mph) in 365 and 395/85R20 and K (110km/h / 70mph) in 14.00R20.

You would be better off posting in the Unimog section.

???? You not going to try to tempt to register this in California are you?????
Ah, yes. Congress within days is going to take away all of California's EPA exemptions -- including CARB Diesel emissions, and Trump is going to quickly sign the bills, because he hates California. Now I am definitely not a Trumper. But sometimes the dice rolls your way and you'd be a fool to leave that money on the table. This vehicle was originally licensed in Oregon as an RV and it is only a matter of time that I'll get it registered in California as a RV as well.

Thank you for this information. I will need to get my ECU reprogrammed asap. I'm running 48" tires so what do you think the speed index would be? Also, the speedo only goes up to 100 km. So I think that is a nature place to stop.

Gosh, I hope you are right! My big camper Casa Azul has been "non-op" for the last couple of years and I have received "love" letters from DMV basically telling me there is no way in hell Casa will ever be registered in the state again... So I am on your team, however I'll bet you a crisp "Bengi" that Newsom and his panty-weights are going to throw up some major "hissy-fit" and tie the issue up for years!!!!

I'm just down the road from you in SLO and love living on the central coast, but can not stand the douch bag nazi's that run our state government!

Let me add another item, DO NOT go to your local MBZ dealership to show off your new rig or ask for any information!!
They will have nothing for you of value( thank the "chicken tax" for that) and may be little or no value to you.

Mercedes in the US might not be of help here. I doubt they can program the rig. The speed index of the tire is written on the tire itself, i.e. 395/85R20 J .The J would be speed index 100km/h. The truck itself would run 80mph all day once opened up.
