    Tacoma vs 4Runner TRD Off-Road

You keep saying that about the 3.5L but the power and torque between it and the 4.0L 1GR-FE are similar. The early production in 2016 had some transmission mapping weirdness that made it seem worse than it really was. In real world towing tests the 2GR-FKS performs better than the 4.0L did...

    Tacoma vs 4Runner TRD Off-Road

A Super Duty is not really like a Tacoma in this respect. Can a Taco get 6,400 lbs moving? Sure. But it doesn't have the brakes, torque and power to pull its max rated trailer comfortably. I think most people conclude that 4,500 to maybe 5,000 is about as much as you want to ask a Tacoma to...

    New Raptor..Ram killer

LOL, this is what a GT is supposed to sound like, the brakes screeching like an old school bus and all.

Source needed: Made to order wire with connectors

I have a set of these HX-50B crimpers. The older one with the dies sized in mm rather than AWG. They seem true to gauge and do a nice 6-sided crimp. The dies align well and are symmetrical. They have short handles so for largest sizes they would be a lot of work to fully cycle but for 8, 6...

Help me pick a Toyota platform? Trying to decide amongst: LX/LC/GX/4R/Taco

You mention Access Cab and gen 1 and gen 2. Something to realize is Tacomas didn't get the rear doors on extended cab trucks until the 2nd generation trucks, which are 2005 to 2015. The 1995 to 2004 Tacoma is the 1st gen and 2016+ is 3rd generation. The 1st generation Tacoma XtraCab isn't an...

    Firestick-II cap raising SWR

The cap must apparently be a dielectric and is in effect like putting a capacitor at the end of the antenna. It's like a radome or capacitance hat. Anyway, tune the antenna so that it dips without the cap and note the frequency of lowest SWR. For the the sake of argument say it's 1.5:1 SWR at...

    Longer range handheld options

Yeah, some laws are immutable, such as those of physics. There are ways to make VHF+ travel way beyond the horizon but it's not predictable. For example you can leverage tropospheric ducts that form but instead of 20 miles you might just as likely get 200 and go completely over the head of the...

    Longer range handheld options

LOL, I just meant visually as in graphically. The QSL calculator I'm sure uses radio horizon as you say. Yes, generally with VHF and up the limiting factor is antenna height. Even with towers and mountain tops 5W is usually sufficient practically. It's only when you really want to test DX...

    Longer range handheld options

Line of Sight (LOS) shown visually. VHF RF actually bends over the horizon so you can communication slightly further than you can see. Taken from here if someone wants to dig into propagation more...

    Is it true about ARB?

Engel fridges used to be made in Thailand and the Sawafuji motor/compressor came from Japan. Don't know if that's still true. No idea about Dometic.

    Is it true about ARB?

Yeah, I'd like to see them!

Old Man Emu - Tundra Lift - 2"? More like 4"!

Find a construction site and borrow about a dozen bags of Quikcrete for a weekend. That'll settle them right down. Heck, I see you have a skid steer you might already have the necessary ballast already.

    Is it true about ARB?

Totally agree @67cj5, mine's ancient with just the zero to 5 dial and green power LED. Just works, no fuss.

    Is it true about ARB?

Until you mentioned it I had no idea Dometic had any issues so it does clear things up. I won't be replacing my tried-and-true Engel anytime soon regardless.

    Is it true about ARB?

In case anyone else wonders what he's talking about, the CFX has a recall due to the potential of an over voltage condition (said to be 28V) occurring on the 12V side if you simultaneously connect the fridge to 120V. Whether ARB's design spec contract-built by Dometic shares the same issue is...

Source needed: Made to order wire with connectors

Welding shops can usually make cables. The quality, like many places including marine and heavy equipment shops, varies. Some of them just dimple the terminal with a hammer crimper or use uncalibrated pneumatic crimpers and if so I'd look elsewhere. I bought an FTZ HD crimper years ago and...

solar charge controller as a dc-dc charger?

A PWM solar controller can usually work as a DC-DC converter but be careful with MPPT controllers as they'll try and find the current limit of your power supply and exceed it. Whether this works or crowbars or blows a fuse will depend on the power supply.

How Important Is Ramp Travel Index (RTI)?

Big tires don't work unless they're touching the ground so my $0.02 is suspension function > tire size.

Which Taco for AT Overland build?

If I was in a bind to replace my 2008 TRD Offroad it would 93% surely be with a lower-to-mid range spec Ranger optioned with a locker.

    "Solar Generator"

I do not like the term. Maybe with a solar panel you could stretch the term "generator" but these are just battery packs.
