Targets of opportunity and the way ahead as of June 2015
The bulk of the initial build is done, with predominantly small things left on the list for the moment. One of those was to do a hood blackout. I'd tried plasti-dip with poor results that I just peeled back off and thus while wandering...
I have a small list of parts I'm looking to bring back, those are at the top. Actually looked at one on a truck outside my mechanics yesterday but it had a big crack in the plastic. Before I come home I'm going to try to grab some D1 & Dii versions.
Emirates National Auto Museum (Liwa/Moreeb Pt 3)
On the way home we'd always intended to check this out since I'd heard it was unique, as we pulled up it all came together that this was the giant Series truck's home. I will try to get an album of all the amazing vehicles but the story of it...
Liwa/Moreeb Pt 2
Cont'd in order to dump some more pics in.
Playing with the tripod/timer resulted in some great awkward selfies:
With the temps what they were, we decided to head back. Stopping a few times just to get some pictures of the amazing landscape-for which my photography skills...
Liwa Oasis/Moreeb Dune
Heading into Memorial Day the truck was what I considered Phase 1 complete based off the build plan I'd be operating off of. We'd intended to head to Oman to Jebel Shams for a weekend in the mountains with some family that lives in Muscat but some issues popping up took...
Take a look at the Superwinch Tiger Shark 9500; its an entry level winch but at entry level cost compared to the Warn where I feel like you pay for the badge these days. Its nice that you can get one off Amazon with a synethic line for ~500-600.
Concur with Don. Kaibrenner's experience is about 180 from most in the sense that the general trend has been the LR3/4 has been light years ahead of the Dii in terms of reliability.
One thing that sidesteps a fair amount of this is to get service records, almost any vehicle you are going to...
I will be 100% honest, I never really thought about that aspect of the heat issue until you brought it up. My D1's blue sea aux fuse thing is living inside a space where foam was removed from basically the area under the steering wheel (where the panel folds down to access the fuse box on the...
I like the setup and will probably mimic something like it when I install mine; was very happy with my first yaesu and will probably be looking to put a 7900R in the D3 when I get back.
Concur with jerdog, we might hit a point where a thread on how HAM into the 3/4 could be useful...
It's actually a company called SPG; appears to be a small US based competitor to pelican-ironically it was what I found when I went to the alleged Peli dealer, in the UAE.

Odds & ends
I'm wandering through all the retrofit threads on D3.uk and looking at a few options for MOST integration...not sure I want to go all-in for the OEM for something that is as much an irritation as anything. My D1's upgraded radio is better than my LR3s-but I digress.
A few...
Nick-
Good stuff, my uncle is a retired Senior Chief (QM)-his influence was only somewhat effective since I decided to go Marine, that said I've spent plenty of time on the gator navy and even-sadly-did a tour at CINCLANTFLT/FFC back in the day.
I don't think you will find the maint too bad if...
Def didn't take the input as heckling! I think if I was doing a purpose built truck for out here the winch would be much further down on the list of mods for sure.
I'm jealous of the 300Tdi, the V8 in Coyote is nice but thirsty to say the least. Not sure I want to try to move 255/85s with a...
The HD package is somewhat rare and often overlooked in advertisements you'll find on Autotrader and the like-unless they show you a pic of the rear dif you may/may not even know its there. Zealatore's post hit the main points, but to your question about preventative maint it is the norm...
Olly-
Can't broker serious disagreement with your comments, the only thing I'd do is highlight the context of the build/endstate. Sadly my time in the UAE is finite-as is the trucks. We'll be here ~24mos, with the truck here less than that so this thing was always being build with an endstate...
Great minds indeed! I have been pretty happy with it thus far; I see you are also like we are in many ways-a smaller GPS complimented by a tablet running maps (we found the navigator used the ipad a lot while the driver was using the Garmin for orientation). How is your tablet mounted?
