I had a mystery “clunk” start up in the front suspension of my Ram 3500 after playing down in Big Bend NP. Could not really tell where the noise came from other than front end.
I started methodically visually inspecting and checking tightness/looseness of everything I could reach.
Finally...
At the end of the day you will treasure:
Powered fan over bunk and near cooking area.
If canvas/vinyl sides an insulation package.
As much storage space as you can get.
A 12 volt compressor refrigerator built in or chest.
At least a minimal water system and a sink.
A comfortable bunk requiring...
Looks like a great foundation. Be watching how you build it out.
Way back in the day I rigged up a Ford van…started with a bare interior. I really learned to love, in no particular order:
venting windows with removable screening, a powered roof vent that could reverse and blow air onto a...
Your initial post sums it up...you’re not building a rock crawler.
The size & weight of your rig, running solo, and having your family along all in the mix balanced with experience and sense dictate having some capable recovery gear.
Our rig is a Ram 3500 with a FWC Hawk and loaded is 10k...
For the “feet forward“ mount one thought would be to reorient the relay box back to the original vertical position. Would provide I think better protection from water/dust intrusion, easier access for inspection & service.
Vehicle based comfortable sleeping is a system.
My pad for 20 years has been the Thermarest Basecamp. This type of pad is available from several vendors, comes in various sizes and thicknesses. It mostly self inflates and the valve lets you set your support level. Ideal for vehicle-based...
The GD Momentum has worked out very well for us. The "toy hauler" features a easy to maintain/clean and flexible rear interior (we have the electric lift rear dinette/queen bed system and solid rear glass panel doors), ability to store the E-bikes internally for transport and the rear deck...
Another trip...can't wait to watch for your trip reports & photos. With your level of experience and common sense, a solid AWD vehicle, and a good folding shovel you should be good to go.
Just some random roads and POI's most will have mentions/reports on this site for more details:
1: A...
As mentioned, those doors are for easy access to the tiedowns.
I run a 2018 Four Wheel Camper Hawk on a Ram3500. The Hawk sits on a rubber stall mat. The camper has wood runners/slats that keep the camper from sitting in water and allow ventilation. A plain flat floor sitting in the truck...
If the wood is soft, replace it. Paint with a good exterior paint.
Hard to tell from photo…is floor bottom surface flat? Most camper floor bottoms have runners/slats that raise the floor about an inch or so to prevent just sitting in water. Something like pressure treated 2x2 running...
Congratulations on the sale.
Oh, and if that Blue Heeler gets into that king size bed…you likely have about a foot of free space left for yourself!
Mine is a bed hog!
Our Bluebird Wanderlodge had the entire roof covered with aluminum step plate. It was mounted with rubber strips about 1/2 inch above the roof screwed down to the ribs. No leaks. Could sit up there in chairs. Insulation value minimal …usefulness maximum. We sold it after 17 years…but now at...
About 2 years ago I wanted to upgrade some of my side dish options. As a general plan my main course is often a portion of grilled or pan seared chicken, steak or seafood and this is where I tend to spend my time and effort for seasoning/preparation. I have no oven or microwave, and my...
