2018 Your Pick: Expedition Base Vehicle Recommendations

My trucks cargo capacity is 3100#. A 250 diesel, with a few frivolous options, is often only a piddly 2000# cargo capacity. Barely enough for that camper when it's loaded. I doubt an F150 will work well. Even if you're within the sticker rating, it'll be wobble and roll city. A 350...

Ideas for a family of 4 camper?

+1. We preferred 4, two person, pup tents. Little tents, especially quality Marmot or Mountain Hardwear tents work excellent. In fact, I'll never take a trailer anywhere, without a couple tents in it.

    Super Duallies any good off-road

I allows you to select tires more suitable, and larger, than a normal DRW truck ever could. Fire dept brush trucks are often F550's converted with super single wheels.

2017 Alumiduty Carli Equipped on 40’s

Wait until the Fox ACS, pass through, steering damper comes out. There's a couple out there kinda custom, should be a catalog item soon. As much as I like King shocks, a steering dampers piston rod should travel completely through the shock body so there is no displacement change inside the...

Vehicle research: RAM 1500 info sought....

Or get a ZR2, or get a Raptor, or get a Rubicon, or get an overpriced off road package that isn't as good as hand picked aftermarket parts. It used to be that those packages were often cheaper than building them yourself. But today, none of them are available without 3 thousand dollar...

Favorite Big truck all-terrain tire or mud for camper weight and longevity?

    1. Cooper ST Maxx 2. Cooper STT Pro, Mickey Thomson MTZ P3, Toyo MT. Maxxis Trepador Radials are worth mentioning, no idea for camper travel though.

Vehicle research: RAM 1500 info sought....

The lowest price I could get on a PW was $55,000. I'd consider building one off of a base Ram or Ford. That's $17,000 more than my out the door cost. -Front locker and 4.88 gears $3000 -37" Cooper STT Pros on Raceline Defender 18x9 +18mm wheels, $2300 -BDS 4" radius arm lift $1700 -King 2.5...

Ideas for a family of 4 camper?

Even a tiny TT is bigger than a slide in camper. And 3 times less expensive.

    Compressor for scuba tank

Who uses air tools anymore? Get a 1/2" electric impact and 4 batteries. When it dies, go back to hand tools.

Ideas for a family of 4 camper?

I can't tell you what to do, but I can mention what works for me. My favorite setup: F250 4x4 CCSB, BDS level kit, airbags or Sumo Rebel, GenY WD hitch 23' Travel Trailer w/dinette & couch slideout (about 60% of that trucks capacity) Ladder rack for kayaks 37x13.5 Cooper STT Pros or 35x12.5...

2018 Your Pick: Expedition Base Vehicle Recommendations

2017+ Ford F250 XL Fx4 CCSB and a light camper. (or a 23' TT since slide in campers have piss poor fun/cost ratio) F350 CCLB for a bigger slide in camper. Skip the diesel and other assorted unnecessary frivolities, and it's a $38,000 truck. Right now, most campgrounds are parking...

Guidance needed: ZJ or GMT360? (Jeep vs. GM)

XJ, or put a built up 44 in the ZJ. Xterra, 4runner, Pathfinder, anything but a Envoy. LOLz. If XJ's still exist in OH, they have to be abundant in the drier states still.

    Question regarding MPG

The "foreign mini trucks" have pretty dismal ec and range as well. If your talking about the nicely outfitted Aussie trucks, and not the tiny stripped down little Mexican junkers. 38 gallons of gasoline is plenty for me. I always refill as I exit the freeway. I have 2 five gallon jugs in...

Late Model Ford F350 Can't charge the truck camper battery

IIRC, you have to stomp on the brake to wake the plug up, as well. If I park with the truck running, and plug the trailer in, I don't think it lights up until I jump in and hit the brakes. I'm renting a trailer (with no brakes) this weekend. I'll look into it.

    F-150 Diesel

+1. The F150 STX with the 5.0L is the one I still push to people that keep their trucks as long as they can. Simple, reliable, plenty of power, cheap, not bad economy. If I could spec an olde 2v 4.6L I would. I think the diesel is just for diesel fans. Or long range expo types...

Late Model Ford F350 Can't charge the truck camper battery

Is the trailer LED? You might have to add load. Check the fuses under the hod and the kick panel. Also check the "plugs of death" near the spare tire. Use a good dielectric grease to seal them back up.

    True Trac vs Open Diff

Having owned an Econoline 350 (whale tail version), the Truetrac is the only viable option for a rear diff for that 2wd van. Unless extensively modified, Econolines aren't as forgiving as the trucks are. A Detroit locker would be perfect if you never, ever, see snow and have tires that are...

Anyone using a new Ford Superduty with the 6.2L?

It'll be fine with that tire. You'll notice, but it'll still be practical.

BFG T/A KO2 vs Cooper STT PRO?

I've had both. The Cooper STT and ST Maxx are far better at everything in Ohio. My truck will be getting a set of 285/75r17 ST Maxx's on the stock 17" wheels, and a set of 37x13.5r18 STT's (or Maxxis Trepadors) on 18x9 +18 Raceline Defenders for local use. It's not fair to compare a sand...
