Opinions wanted: Harbor Frieght Engine Hoist - 1 ton verses 2 ton

Thanks Guys. 2 ton purchased. Sonarman, I wish! I won't even be able to fit the engine hoist in my garage, let alone an overhead! Also, I'm curious about your name. I was an STG in the Navy on Burke Class Destroyers (DDG-54 Curtis Wilbur)

    LR3 Coil spring conversion kit

I didn't have this lift, but I had a springer with 40mm lift, and then swapped in a 65mm lift using oversized coils. Not sure if my experience is relevant, but If I can answer a question, I will.

Opinions wanted: Harbor Frieght Engine Hoist - 1 ton verses 2 ton

For working on passenger vehicles and light trucks, is a 2 ton hoist necessary? Is there any substantial difference between the 2 sizes of hoists? Perhaps a better question is, should I just rent a hoist verses buying the Harbor Freight version? Cost would be about the same.

    1995 montero hold mode HELP

Is the hold button engaged? It’s on the flat part of the center console, near the ash tray. Sounds silly, but I made the same mistake a couple years ago, and finally discovered that the button was pushed in. Doh!

Securing basic gear in the back

I don’t have a photo handy, but I use plastic milk crates tied down with ratchet straps. I’ll loop the strap through or around the heavier items like my power tank or air compressor.

Disco 2’s..... Any intel on the height or size of your drivers? D2’s hate taller drivers.

    I have caught the bug...

IMHO, the RTT is a $2,000 luxury accessory that reduces your trucks handling and performance and kills your MPG. They are not a gimmick, there is a lot to be said for quick and easy set up/tear down of "camp", but DO NOT let the right tent stop you from using that killer rig you have now. A...

    XJ/ZJ as budget off roader

Lots of threads on the values of the ZJ and XJ. I’d also suggest considering the WJ, which is far more comfortable than the XJ and has a V8, yet still has solid axles front and rear (as do all three). I’ve heard lots of people have frame issues with XJ’s and ZJ’s, but I think that’s mostly...

Can a stock LR4 handle Canyonlands & Moab?

I’d be mostly worried about tire puncture in Canyonlands, but Elephant Hill is fine, better in the LR4 than most rigs due to its excellent turning radius. I have about a thousand photos online of LR3’s doing Moab trails and posted a fairly detailed write up about various Moab trails and LR3/4...

Ship ahead bulky items you’ll think you’ll really need. This is particularly handy if you’ll be spending more time at certain places, like a porta -crib Ship things you don’t want try to find a match for, like a particular brand of infant milk, diapers, or jars of food, depending if your...

Oh sorry, missed the XJ part. Their TJ stuff will fit, but it’s not exactly the same as a tailored application.

Terraflex or AEV. Both extremely well engineered and tested, with high quality manufacturing. Search Terraflex videos on YouTube, there’s a few put out by the company itself that show the how why and what (results) of their product.

Diagnosing and Fixing a 2002 Montero 3.5L V6 SOHC that might be seized up

Well, ran into a couple of set-backs, only one of them being the disintegrated piston. The previous owner never found her title document, so technically, I am not the legal owner of this rig. That might be rectified soon, but until then, I am hesitatant to put more money into this thing...

    Sand Rover?

Just wrong on so many levels. When I had my 2004.5 model year V6 springer LR3, I also had an ultra light weight 455hp Corvette Z16. And for a few months I had a V8 LR3 as a loaner. Going back to the V6 from those vehicles was NOT a disappointment. I will grant you that at freeway speeds...
