leaving the 80 series behind thinking about 95 discovery

Maintenance is key for any vehicle. Either buy one that has been maintained, or expect to invest time and money initially getting it up to spec. All vehicles have weaknesses. Learn and apply the known fixes. As for visibility, sit in one and see. For power, it'll be similar to an FJ80.

    Old Rovers Too Feeble?

Vehicle electronics are not made to the same service life standards as medical devices. Some day they might, but not now.

Anyone know the official name of this Series paint color?

There are a lot of variables in trying to match these photos: camera, lighting, color profile, post processing, etc Maybe it's just a custom paint job

    What would you do

This often causes more problems than its worth by clogging up parts which were previously fine. I hope in your case it doesn't.

    What would you do

For 1500, I'd just have your local machine shop install flanged liners.

    i wanna buy a disco 2 but................

How do you make a rover reliable? Same way as any old neglected vehicle. Maintain it. You'll probably have a lot to make up for at first though. Beyond that, learn the known fixes to common issues specific to the vehicle.

    Old Rovers Too Feeble?

I do my modern exploring at 55 while relaxing. I doubt any stock classic SUV is very comfortable at 65. As for the 10 spline axles, just take it easy. They served many people and got work done for many years. Otherwise, upgrade. We're lucky to live in an era now where upgrades are available for...

Disco II owners: What can I do to "desert-proof" my truck?

Ultragauge. The stock temp gauge is nearly worthless. An ultragauge will let you see live readout of much engine data, including the actual engine temperature. You can even set alarms if it gets too high, an invaluable feature where it's hot. There are alternatives to the typical 50/50...

"In the past I've driven and owned a variety of vintage 4WDs, from a Willys Wagon to a Land Rover Series, but they all proved a bit too feeble for modern day exploring. " -Matthew Scott Don't seem too feeble to me.

    Long Jeep.....chasing unicorns

Nothing against Jeeps, Toyota, etc. Just throwing ideas out there with what I'm most familiar with. Cheap rovers (RRC, D1, D2) are all over the place and ready to be hacked up. The bodies are marine grade aluminum, I'd say 60-100 thou depending on area. Frames are very heavy. There's a reason...

    Long Jeep.....chasing unicorns

So you want an off-roader with room and HD drivetrain. It's not that hard. Upgrade their axles and many Rovers fit that definition. Any 110" Defender/Series LWB RRC 101 FC You could even swap your favorite diesel (or LR diesel to make it easier). See these...
