As far as I know they all are the same fitment, but there may be different spring rates or dampening for later ones that got the 3.8L. You could ask ARB about it. They seem to have a lot of info about vehicle weights and the best suspension set ups using their OME kits. At the very least...
After really wanting a Land Cruiser I came to the conclusion I will never be able to save up the money to pay the prices 100s are going for and am now looking at a Montero instead. I am holding out for the 3.8L. The main draw for an SUV is the 3rd row seating with 2 small kids.
A few...
^^^What Toasty said for the Gen 2-2.5 years.
Gen 3 models are also a good option for daily driving and taking passengers along on trips. Another member asked me about using one for towing, and I sent him this information about the Gen 3s. I will also say that I have used both versions of the...
Coasting with transmission in N is not damaging as long as the engine is on. It won't save fuel though. Modern engines with EFI are designed to run on minimal or no fuel in coasting situations. They shift the pulse width of the injectors or coils to almost zero to conserve fuel, but only in D...
Grab the FSM for the 2003 model from the link in my sig if you do not already have one. The 03 might be the closest, but there is one for engines from 1990-2002. These have always been a big help for me.
I would also check the IAC and vacuum lines. My 01 had a hard time starting in cool...
Ignore the dealer. Buy 10-12 quarts of diamond sp III and do a full flush and fluid change. The Aisin clutch packs in the transmission do best with fresh fluid. Flushing the system will cause the TCU to "relearn" the shifting parameters, but it should smooth out after a couple months. I have...
I think the Gen 2 and Montero Sport rear differentials are the same so it is likely that there are ones with lockers. There were also more available gear ratios for the solid axles than the Gen 3 IRS. Gen 3 are always 4.90 with a 4-speed and 4.3 with a 5-speed unless someone made a swap. The...
This is a really good guide. It would be nice to have all that buyer's guide information together for the Montero/Pajero in one sticky thread. I have owned both versions of Gen 3, but I only have a little knowledge of Gen 1 and 2.
Basic Information: I believe this is accurate and enough to get a general idea while looking
Montero(US)/Shogun(UK)/Pajero(Everywhere else) is the full size SUV and all are 4WD.
Gen 1: 1982-1991
2 and 4 door versions
Inline 4 and 3.0L V6
5-speed Manual or 4-speed Auto
Rebadged and sold as Dodge...
All Monteros/Pajeros have a frame. The Gen 3-4 are a monocoque where the passenger compartment is a solid welded unit. The ladder frame railes are inserted into the monococque and run from the front bumper to the rear. Subframes holding the front and rear axles are attached to the frame...
While the Dakar cars were mostly factory special builds, the Gen 3 and 4 Pajeros are regularly used as 4WD desert racers. Geoff Pickering has won the Production class 12 times at the Finke race in Australia where the factory drivetrain and chassis must be retained. Only safety and suspension...
My 01 had issues with starting. I had to keep light throttle until it warmed up. It turned out to be an issue in the vacuum lines. I would also recommend checking and cleaning the idle air control valve.
I went with OEM pads that I bought on sale several years ago and Raybesto rotors. The daily driver selections on Rock Auto have been more than adequate. I use mine offroad and for towing on a regular basis.
RAYBESTOS 96983R
RAYBESTOS 96975R
I prefer OEM or similar pads to keep the noise and...
I remember seeing this monster. Very cool build and I like the lights. I went with Rigid lights and a "factory" style switch. Still needed the 30A relay, though.
Welcome! Always good to have more Mitsubishi fans. You may also get more help in the Heavy Mitsu truck section as well. Most here are SUVs.

They will when the valve seals wear out, but the 3.5l is worse about that than the 3.8l. I have 126k miles (with +1" tires) and have not yet noticed any oil burning. My 01 had 176k miles and just had a slight valve cover leak. Still was not enough to notice between oil changes. Just keep an...
I think that is a Gen 3 with the 3.5L engine. If so, then that is just empty space. Brake assembly is moved there in RHD models, and others have used it for dual battery setup.
All XLS models were made for the US as 01-02 year models. 4 speed transmission and manual transfer case (2H-4H-4L) with 4.9 differential gears, and the 3.5L engine. Various options and packages have been found on these, depending on the dealership that first ordered. Some can have the hybrid...
