Professional mechanic here. I recommend the Chevy without hesitation for several reasons:
You can get AWD in your budget.
Not that hard or expensive to make it 4wd
They have proven reliable. I have worked on many fleet vans with 4-500,000 miles on them that were not taken care of.
If you...
I like the layout so far. Flexible, functional, open space. Working on something similar in my Savana. Just wondering if you are planning on building anything in on the drivers side or just strapping the fridge down?
edit. Just went back and saw your sketch for cabinets. Can't wait to see it.
As others have recommended, I believe tool bags are the best solution. They can be shoved in unused space and don't slide around too much. I am a professional mechanic and often end up carrying a lot of tools because I never know what I'll be working on (unless loading for a trip then I take...
I wasn't paying enough attention. There are a lot of replacements for sealed beam 6054 depending on how much money you want to spend. Hella makes a set that takes your choice of H4 bulb. I have them in my Astro with standard wattage low beam / higher wattage high beam. They seem like the...

I think all of the 60s in the vans may have been semi float. Its a 33 spline axle. I'll be swapping for a 14 bolt when I get a chance. The cutaways (box trucks) have 70s or 80s and the frame is different.
There should be a white tag on the axle tube on the driver's side with the axle...
I'm not sure there is really much difference between the 2500 and 3500 as long as you get the higher gvw 2500 with steering gear box instead of rack and pinion or the 6 lug fake 2500. Maybe rear springs are different? I've got a 3500 and was pretty disappointed that it came with a semi-float...
The oil pump would probably bring the pressure up but I think he was suggesting it as a band aid. Probably has worn out cam bearings but I've seen some of these last a while with low oil pressure.
By the way, I'm still interested. Not sure if you got my pm.
