    Advice From All You Medics

Had my first test covering 6 chapters today and scored an 84. It was disappointing but after seeing what the other folks got I didnt feel so bad. Im not a very good studier, so I will change up my methods and try to get a better score next time. We are diving into pathophysiology next week, wow.

    I'm back in a Toyota!!!

I did try doing that once and some air did come out. I stopped after I couldnt see air coming out anymore though. I might have stopped too soon. I will give this another try. The truck has always used Dex III but I unknowingly put ps fluid in it a couple weeks ago. I have since been repremanded...

Yeah I know what you mean. Our first test covering 6 chapters was scheduled for the third day of class! It got pushed back though due to snow, so I am using my time wisely.

    ExpertGPS

I really like the software for what I use it for. I have a handheld GPS that I use most of the time. It is small portable and waterproof, so I can take it with me when I leave the truck. I try to use maps as much as possible but I record and plan trails using the GPS. I use ExpertGPS to pull up...

    Advice From All You Medics

One way is by hitting the "QUOTE" button in the lower right hand side of someone elses post. Thats what I just did with this one. Another way is to make the quote yourself like this [.QUOTE=jh504] use that for the start and then this for the end [./QUOTE] except take the periods out so it will...

    Advice From All You Medics

Im not sure how it works to be honest with you. I have never taken an online course. It could be that everything is online except for the labs. We have also been informed that it will be an abreviated course designed specifically for the paramedic curriculum. I will find out in about a month, so...

Thats correct. Once a week for 8 hours. We have a seperate A&P class that is online. We are also required to run over 500 clinical hours during this timeframe.

    Advice From All You Medics

I agree with you about the ALS issues. The guys who have no interest in medicine shouldnt go beyond BLS, in my opinion. Because that is getting into really serious stuff and if they dont have a love for it they have no business doing it. I like fire based EMS (as my avatar might show), but I...

    Advice From All You Medics

Congrats on the intermediate. Most of my fire buddys around here feel the same way you do about medical.:) When I tell them Im doing paramedic, they are like,"dude dont be one of those guys, you need to be fighting fire!" I laugh it off, because I like both. I dont think I would stay interested...

    Advice From All You Medics

Thankfully I havnt started A&P yet, I think I sill have a few weeks before that begins. I wonder how they will do as well. There are some other folks in there that I know, and have worked with. It scared me to see a few of them in the class. If they do end up passing I still will not let them...

    I'm back in a Toyota!!!

Thanks for the info. I have a new problem with the truck. I have all of my suspension components in but all of my time has been devoted to finding out what is wrong with my power steering! At first it had a small whine when turning and braking, then it got louder and louder. I replaced the...

    Advice From All You Medics

Yeah, we will keep it going with progress reports. Our class has a very large variety of students. We have some in the class who are still waiting for their basic certification to come back. Then there are some with many years on the job. Normally in NC you have to have real experience for 1...

    Advice From All You Medics

Haha, I have been in and out of Durham quite a bit with JAS. Parkwood is actually on our list to run clinicals, I think you guys are the only department in Durham County we can run clinicals with. I would like to get some good trauma experience over there. You guys deal with a lot of BS too though.

    Advice From All You Medics

I understand where you are coming from and please dont read me the wrong way. I could very easily be just a firefighter, and when I started that is exactly what I wanted. I had NO interest in EMS or really even rescue. I wanted to get dirty and fight fires. However when I started running calls I...

My experience using my SPOT Messenger's 911 emergency button

Your sons allergies are the kind of thing that scares the crap out of me out somewhere like that. My mother in law has the same issues and she loves to hike. I was just telling her the other day she needs to carry her epipen EVERYWHERE because she usually forgets it. 2 hrs is still a long time...

My experience using my SPOT Messenger's 911 emergency button

Understood, I am not really involved in backcountry rescue just wondering if that is a normal time frame. This brings up and excellent point that everyone venturing into the backcountry should have medical knowledge to some degree. You might be your only rescuer.

My experience using my SPOT Messenger's 911 emergency button

Thats what I was thinking as well. If your out there and in trouble, 2 hours to wait for a helicopter is still a much better alternative to having to hike it out or go by 4x4. With a broken leg 4x4 travel could seriously endanger ones life anyway. However, when investing in something like this...
