    Roof Top Tents

Here's a picture of a roof top tent that I saw on a van in a British Columbia provincial park. I suspect there is a mattress in the overhanging lid, and that it is accessible from inside the van. If so, it is like the Wildernest campertop that I had on my S10 pickup. paulj

Lightweight Expedition Options (Element, RAV4, Suzuki)

From what I've personally seen in British Columbia, and read on trail reports at http://www.bc4x4.com/tr/ the little Suzukis (and the GM Tracker) do seem to be a popular choice in Canada, both for road use, and off road. And I have driven some over grown forest service roads where a narrow car...

    Cargo basket vs. cargo box

While I have used a Yakima Basketcase and Seattle Sports bag, I've been happier with a Thule Sidekick box. These are on the small side, 7-8 cubic feet. As you say the box keeps gear out of sight, and clean (even on dusty roads). Generally access to the box is easier. Also a box is more...

Lightweight Expedition Options (Element, RAV4, Suzuki)

Here's a thread that describes an actual attempt to add some lift to an Element - by putting spacers between the tops of the struts and their mounts. In his latest post, OZified wrote that he was able fit the spacers/extensions on the front struts, but couldn't fit them on the rear ones...

    Dishes!

The 'blue plate' picture was taken in the clearing at the bottom of the valley. There's a narrow 12 km road winding up the mountain to the top of Idaho peak. Supposedly from the top there are even better views. To the west there is a large lake, Slocan Lake, and the Valhalla Provincial Park...

    Dishes!

I only have one plate, and keep it in the snack bag. We mainly use it as cutting board and serving plate at lunch. I rarely snap the corners to turn it into a deeper bowl. I keep a set of GSI plastic bowls and plates in the main kitchen box for cooked meals. paulj

    Dishes!

Here's lunch time still-life, taken while exploring the Kootenay Mtns of British Columbia. Also a photo of the Idaho Pk Rd, and a view down on the mining ghost town of Sandon.

Universal Mount for Phones, GPS, Radios....

It reminds me RAM Mount components http://www.ram-mount.com/ With any of these systems there are 3 key components: - the device holder - the arm - the base attached to the car. Have a RAM mount for my IFINDER GPS unit. The GPS holder is designed specifically for the GPS unit. To mount the...

    Rokon motorcyles

that brings back memories of browsing old copies of Popular Science/Mechanics as a kid :-) I wonder if these perform any better, or worse, than quad ATVs. If I recall correctly the hollow wheel drums allowed this cycle to float. Their FAQ has an interesting comment on contact pressure -...

    Kitchen Configurations:

I have a variety of GSI pans and dishes. Their hard anodized wok fits nicely on my Trangia stove. Their two piece 'boiler' set is a nice compact pair for use with a small stove. One of these days I may get one of their anodized dutch ovens. Their lexan and plastic bowls and plates fit...

    Coffee Preparations

Because of all these issues in dealing with garbage and dishwater, I try to use cooking methods and foods that keep cleanup simple, and use the least amount of water. Even in estabilished campgrounds disposal of dishwater is a borderline activity. Some have dishwater disposal points, often...

    Kitchen Configurations:

With a few modifications you could enter that trailer box into a chuck wagon competition. Where do you keep the medicinal whisky? :gunt:

Waterton-Glacier and Yellowstone NP (Date still open)

Different forest districts have different policies regarding distributed camping. That's why I suggested looking up the districts. As an example in the forests that I am most familiar with in western Washington, there are a number of sites that have been used informally for years - some off on...

Lightweight Expedition Options (Element, RAV4, Suzuki)

I saw some pictures of the Dakar RAV4 back when I was hanging around the rav4world.com forum. As I recall, the modifications were considerably more than 'a little'. The RAV4 has been the competition car for the Fulda Challenge for past several years...

    Awnings

A rather different style of awning is the Kelty Carport - it is, in effect, an arched leanto that attaches to your truck's roof rack. http://www.kelty.com/Kelty/index.cfm?fuseaction=Tents.ShowProduct&type=shelters&ID=14 http://www.pbase.com/paulj3/ewithcarport One qualification - depending on...

Lightweight Expedition Options (Element, RAV4, Suzuki)

The Element's suspension has the same geometry as the CRV and Civic, but with stiffer and larger components to handle the greater weight and height. That includes fairly stiff anti-sway bars to reduce body roll. In a crude sense, I think of it as a box on a sports car suspension. When I put...

Waterton-Glacier and Yellowstone NP (Date still open)

I'm not quite sure what you mean by 'common campgrounds'. Apart from the busy National Park campgrounds, most designated sites are on Forest Service lands. There may also be some BLM campsites. Some Forest Service districts also allow 'distributed' camping. For a start, identify the forest...

Lightweight Expedition Options (Element, RAV4, Suzuki)

I have the automatic transmission, and use the lower gears regularly on backroads. The Honda transmission is different from some others in that in the '2' setting, it does not downshift, a feature which useful in snow when you want to apply power gently to avoid wheel spin. As a rough estimate...
