    Options for flat-sided storage boxes?

We’ve used a couple of aluminum dry boxes from FrontierPlay for several years. You lose a bit of space to the handles, and the lip is slightly inset for the rubber gasket. On the other hand, they are quite sturdy and have never leaked, even in heavy rains. They seem a bit cheaper than the alu...

    Removable Drawer System?

We had a similar issue. We wanted a camp kitchen that was easy to install and remove. We ended up building a plywood box tat could attach to the SUV‘s tie down points. The drawers and other compartments then fit in and around this base. It may not be quite what you’re looking for, but maybe it...

hitch mounted cargo storage idea - thoughts

We did something like this for a 5000 mile trip with our Dodge last summer. We used a swing-out arm from Yakima to allow easy access into the back of the vehicle. Here are pictures of it both opened and closed: https://expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/the-artful-dodger.207448/post-2658529...

We ordered them both from Amazon. It looks like quite a few distributors sell variants of the same things. Here is link to the magnetic sunroof screen we ordered, and here is a link to the side window screens. The side screens come two to a pack.

    NET ZERO

billiebob, I responded on the earlier thread about your specific question: https://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/goal-zero-or-other-comparable-systems.207352/post-2659362 In short, I suspect you would be in pretty good shape if you install the solar panels. Moreover, I think the...

Goal zero, or other comparable systems

Given the numbers I noted above, I suspect this is the case. The G500 might be about tapped out if you get a couple or three rainy days in a row. Of course, rainy days would likely come with some lower temps, so the fridge won't have to run as hard.

From the Dometic website, the CRX 80 could draw up to 570 Watt-hours in a 24 hour period if the ambient temperature is 32C (90F). They are a reputable manufacturer, so they may have padded that number some, but it's hard to tell. Also, that number varies with ambient temperature and whether your...

Thanks for the positive feedback Mericas. D-rings on the side of the main compartment line up with 4 tie-down rings in the Durango. It is a little too tight for turnbuckles, so I went with cambuckle straps. The picture below shows a close-up, looking between the main compartment and the...

Thabks, borison, I hope they are helpful to somebody. We just got back from a month long trip across Colorado, staying in a mix of Forest Service lands, State Parks, and private campgrounds. All-in-all, the Artful Dodger worked out very well. There are a few things we'll need to modify before...

    The Artful Dodger

All of this doesn't leave room for things like tents, tarps, camping chairs, screened rooms, coolers, and other items that make back-country life comfortable. For these things, we added roof-top storage and a hitch-mounted rack. We attached the rack to a swing-out arm so we could access the...

With both cabinets pulled out, you have about 45"x38" worth of countertop, including the sink.

The passenger side cabinet has a large sink and a shelf for taller items. The sink is reversals, so youcan place the faucet on either the left or right side. Water reaches the sink from a foot-operated pump that stores next to the sink for travel. Enough tubing to reach the ground and back is...

I built the driver's side cabinet with three drawers above three shelves. The width of each drawer-shelf pair was chosen to custom fit our galley pieces. We like to cook on portable butane stoves, because it allows us to cook with two large pots/skillets at the same time. (The dual burner...

We found window screens that fit over the door frame, so you can lower the windows while you sleep without bugs getting in. A magnetic version goes over the sun roof, which provides a good amount of airflow.

Here is what it looks like in the Durango when configured for five travelers. Here is what it looks like when configured for two travelers. A Full-sized memory foam mattress just fits across the top. It is comfortable enough sleeping on top but can feel a bit claustrophobic. There is enough...

    The Artful Dodger

I built a teardrop-in-an-SUV slide-in platform with four major pieces: a main compartment, two pull-out cabinets, and a front compartment. The main compartment sits atop the third row seats and straddles the water tank. It holds the two cabinets. The front compartment sits atop the second row...

The Durango has three rows of seating. Behind the third row is a recessed compartment; the compartment cover can be removed. The jack, tire iron, and related tools are usually stored here. By removing these and their mounting bracket, I found that a 14 gallon water container fits pretty well...

    The Artful Dodger

The Dodge Durango doesn't get much love in expeditioning circles, especially the third generation models that switched from body-on-frame to unibody construction. Of course, nobody is going to confuse one of these for a serious off-road vehicle, but I think the platform has a lot going for it...

Goal zero, or other comparable systems

I looked hard at the Suaoki units before going with the Goal Zero. They have a very impressive feature set. Their high-end product, the G500, has a list price about $100 less than the corresponding GZ, the Yeti 400. It offers 18% more energy storage and has a built-in MPPT solar charger instead...
