Unicorn on the Ocean - 1120AF Coming to Canada

No going back now! I built 8 very tall adjustable frame stands, made lots of measurements and scribe marks along the chassis rails and sent it with a zip disc. Intimidating stuff. Now I'm getting the extension segments made, as well as the internal stiffeners, then stitch this machine back...

    Lowly the Lorry. . .

Looking good, thanks for sharing. This is exactly how I want to do my interior also, mainly because I'm better on Solidworks than I am with woodwork! When you say out of square, do you mean the X and Y axis were not sufficiently perpendicular to each other? Or something else I should look...

Thank you for that, certainly would be the easiest and least intrusive option, I'll see how packaging our storage boxes goes and what room I have. Our boxes will likely be mounted to the subframe so they'll move with the habitat, but I'm not 100% on that yet. Might suspend them from the chassis...

I do yes, and I think I've got my head around the process. The bolted in portion is the reinforcing/backup angle parts that extend 500mm past the extension weld. A picture would be great thank you, I've noticed a lot of commercial box trucks have their exhaust do the same. But I'm thinking if...

The teardown phase is just about complete, next step is cutting the frame for the extension. I need to source some material that matches the specs, European standards versus Canada makes that a little challenge but I have the help of a well qualified welder. I still can't get over how clean...

Love this approach, I'm still on chassis prep but when I get stuck into the cad I intend to do it this way. Will watch with huge interest, I do need a reason to buy a cnc router! Thanks for sharing

Thank you, and yes I saw your wheel carrying system and was studying with great interest! I plan to either suspend my spare wheel from the chassis, or subframe. I don't like the idea of it hanging on the box itself. I only have one spare, so a little more managable. I wish I could leave the...

Yes it's odd, that length is going to clash with two cross members, and some reinforcing on the inside at the spring mount. In that case they say to weld onto any other reinforcing you find along the way. And I suspect I need too add a cross member, but I'm unsure on the spacing requirements...

Haha, as soon as I saw the words dry to start I knew what video it was going to be. I watched it and he's right. Mercedes provides the information (in german) on their bodybuilder (no not that type) portal. Link below. Im am getting a german friend to translate some of it, when I have a clearer...

Finally a big step, pulling the rear box. A bit sketchy unloading it in a soggy back yard with hi lift jacks, but now I have a big red shed! Boy was it a tight fit getting it back there. Next steps are removing the generator, relocating the hydraulic pump, and extending the frame. Does...

Time is flying and life keeps getting in the way... but a few bits and bobs have been done. I got the auto chain slingers (on-spots) working, had a little play in the snow with them. Will probably pull them off though, once we're on super singles they'll need moving anyway and I am probably...

With my BC license I had to do a two day air brakes endorsement but that was all for license. I got a transit insurance binder from ICBC that's designed for this kind of purpose. Then for vehicle registration I decided that the Dutch plates and registration were probably maybe close enough. It...

Yeah we went all in, I'm glad I found such a well maintained example. Saved some headaches! There was something on the VIN decode about a heavy duty cab tilt. F31 I think was the code. Hopefully it'll give me capacity for adding a small roof rack. Just need to get it working properly first!

5.5 days to cover 5350kms, mission successful. Cruising at 85km/h, 2,300rpm, 22l/100km across a VERY wintery Canada. The flame starter fuse had been pulled, and it sparked a lot when I tried to put one back in so I left it out. I would like to fix this. It still started at -10c two mornings in...

She's arrived! Very exciting. Extremely clean, it is hard to believe. No corrosion even on fasteners. It even has all the original tools with it, air line for tyre topping up also. I can't tell if it has the 4 wheel park brake system. When I push the park brake lever inwards and down from...

I would love to see a photo of the setup if you have one on file? It's something I thought would be a good idea and one less way to break down with a little redundancy

I enjoy electrical systems and have build a few of my own lithium batteries and my westfalia has a DIY lifepo4 system. I'm looking forward to that aspect of the build. A ways away yet though! On that topic.... Is the cigarette lighter socket in the cab on these 12v or 24? I see a that the...

Yeah it was, I have no idea when, it's an odd mix of things sprayed red and things not sprayed red! Perhaps Geser did it during the build? There's a good number of original build items not red, so that's why I think it was done when the truck was new. As to why... I have no idea. The exhaust...

The habitat electrical system will be either 24 or 48v. Only 48v as I might have a lead on some very affordable (free) batteries and inverter.... Otherwise I'll go 24v. I woke up to a picture of the RORO ship sent by my dad, it's docked in the UK a few miles from his commute so he swung by to...

Good to know, my Dad is flying out to join me for the cross Canada road trip. Would save me some shipping. I'll have a look, thank you.
