    IPAD2 nav help

Good question. Most survey-grade GPS receivers would use all the data available, properly weighted, for the solution. For a $100 navigation unit, once the hardware has been designed and installed for both GPS and GLONASS, it is probably no more costly to use both sets of satellites rather than...

    IPAD2 nav help

The extra satellites provided by the GLONASS system will not help in open-sky situations where 7, 8 or 9 GPS satellites are clearly visible. In marginal situations where only 3 to 5 GPS satellites are visible and are clustered in a narrow section of sky, the extra GLONASS satellites will...

    IPAD2 nav help

There was a thread mentioning it here http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/80897-Garmin-Glo-GPS It should be available this month and can be pre-ordered now on Amazon. It doesn't appear to need any jailbreaking, but I'm not sure if it will be compatible with the various apps (e.g...

    IPAD2 nav help

Thanks. I'm waiting for the new Garmin GLO to be available. It looks like it should have some operational advantages over the Dual XGPS150A for about the same price. Of course, the Dual is tried and tested whereas the GLO is as yet an unknown quantity.

    Ipad vs GPS unit

Yes, that is what I was saying (or intended to). I was pointing out that the updating of maps and turn-by-turn directions would not work without cell coverage. All map information must be uploaded to the iPad beforehand. The cell network has no effect on the ability to obtain a position or on...

    Ipad vs GPS unit

I'm not sure this is correct. What happens when you venture outside of cell coverage? Surely a wi-fi iPad with an external GPS will do just as well for navigation. Although cell coverage is necessary for updated maps, turn-by-turn directions or unexpected diversions, this will not work in...

    Ipad vs GPS unit

Thanks. I had read that article but for some reason that last paragraph had not registered in my feeble brain. "This is officially confirmed by Motion X." is reassuring.

    Ipad vs GPS unit

This reviewer on Amazon reckons that Motion X and other apps are written specifically for the 3G/4G iPads and will not install on the Wi-Fi only versions. This means they cannot be used on a Wi-Fi iPad with an external GPS. Can anyone confirm or deny this...
