HAM Mobile: Rig Radios, vehicle mounting set ups, and relevant equipment

It wasn’t so bad. I have a waterproof cap I can replace the antenna with if I ever need the clearance. Figure I’ll just put a rubber plug in after removing the NMO mount when I sell it. Ex-police vehicles do this all the time. Also, maybe measure 3 times before cutting the hole. I got lucky...

Spare tire smaller than the tires on the truck?

Perhaps not relevant to your situation, but for others reading this thread - if the intention is to put an aftermarket wheel and tire in the spare location, best to verify the spare tire hoist will fit through the center hole of the wheel. I wanted to run a Rebel wheel as a spare on my 1500, but...

Looking for input - removable LiFePO4 solution with alternator/solar charging

That's good info, I'll take a look at the Orion-Tr Smart.

Looking for input - removable LiFePO4 solution with alternator/solar charging

You're right. 14.6V from the Bioenno charger. I'll fix it above.

Looking for input - removable LiFePO4 solution with alternator/solar charging

It has a few purposes. 1. Battery charger. The Bioenno folks recommend only using their power bricks for charging (14.6V, 10A output), so I like that the PWRGate has a similar profile available. 2. Directly power loads from the alternator when underway. Should help the battery charge...

Looking for input - removable LiFePO4 solution with alternator/solar charging

I haven't measured it, but I've seen references to 0.85 Amps/hour draw on a few websites in reference the 37qt fridge. Agreed if I was living in this thing, or didn't already have the battery I should get into the weeds and figure out my exact needs. Having the battery already, I'm sort of in...

Looking for input - removable LiFePO4 solution with alternator/solar charging

Forgot to mention I have a DC fan controller that will run two fans. I think it turns on/off around 30C. I'd set one fan to suck and the other to blow so there is some airflow in the box.

Looking for input - removable LiFePO4 solution with alternator/solar charging

Hi Folks, I have a RAM 1500 (gasser) that is my daily driver. After a year of waiting, I picked up a GFC camper in December. I chose this camper because I like that it is mainly a truck cap with a wedge tent on top - the truck bed can still be used as a truck bed. The plan is to load up what...

    Yaesu extension cable

You might want to confirm it is RJ-11. My FTM-400XDR has RJ-11 for the mic, but RJ-9 for the control unit. Those curly phone handset extensions have RJ-9 ends on them and come in lots of lengths - but they cross over. It was ok for me as I cut it in the middle, put RJ-11s in a straight-thru...

    RAM 1500 - Mobile VHF/UHF Radio install

Since I was pulling everything apart, I decide to move the loud speaker as well. The Bayou Goat mount I purchased was clearly not built for the weight of the Yaesu MLS-200-M10. If I had ordered the "triple mount", I may have been OK as it appears to lay flat on top of the console, while the...

    RAM 1500 - Mobile VHF/UHF Radio install

I have been planning to install an NMO mounted antenna on my truck since the beginning. I installed a mag-mount antenna when first started operating with my handheld and it worked reasonably well. I noticed recently the coax cable started to scratch the paint, so there was a bit of urgency to...

    RAM 1500 - Mobile VHF/UHF Radio install

Added some RAM mount bits to hold the mic. It is now in a decent position to grab without looking while driving. The lock mechanism takes some practice though. Parts list for those interested (for just the secondary arm and mic holder): RAM-B-273U - RAM BASE W/1/4"-20 HOLE HEX & 1" BALL...

    RAM 1500 - Mobile VHF/UHF Radio install

Managed to move the speaker up to the dash location last night. Required volume dropped from 75% to 40%, so decent improvement. The Bayou Goat mount has a bit of give to it, and the speaker is not exactly lightweight so it bobbles a bit. We'll see how it holds up. Happy with the performance...

    RAM 1500 - Mobile VHF/UHF Radio install

I'm generally leery of cutting factory wires. Here's the post I mentioned earlier where he put a speaker in the headliner behind the overhead console. https://www.ramforumz.com/showpost.php?p=1262664&postcount=10 I think I'd go that route before using the center speaker.

    RAM 1500 - Mobile VHF/UHF Radio install

I’ll keep that in mind as option 4. Option 3 will have it on the dash just above the screen for the stereo head unit. Not exactly stealth, but I don’t mind the look of the round speaker housing. Someone over on ramforumz.com actually had a shop put a speaker in the headliner just behind the...
