Single band vs dual band value

I can fully recommend the IC2730A. I replaced a Yaesu 2900R with it and I believe it is a formidable upgrade. Personally I don't need any of the digital stuff or APRS, most of the repeaters down here are analog anyway!

Single band vs dual band value

A Dual Band Dual Receive radio can be very helpful for mobile operations, and more fun if you're into HAM as a hobby. I'm the former. Personally I wouldn't buy a mobile dual band radio that didn't have dual receivers. I don't need 70cm or 0-1ghz receive, 70cm coverage here is negligible, but...

+1 for the syphon hose. Simple, cheap, reliable.

    PVC Water Supply

These home made tanks are very common down here, especially with fauxverlanders. I consider I need way more than 4 gallons of water for pretty much anything. These tanks are a pain to fill up without a garden hose, the water is always warn (and is not enough for a quick shower) and frankly...

    ARB 63qt fridge questions..

Agreed, normal behaviour for appliances (AC, Fridges, Freezers, etc) Don't worry about the accuracy of the thermometer. What matters it that it cools/freezes when set to either setting.

Ahh thanks for clearing that up. Well that's sad, score one for the Tacoma then.

    200 Series Newbie Questions

I believe any sensible LC driver and aficionado looks up to the 200, and will always want one. I know I do. I believe it is the perfect platform for overlanding. The obvious downside is pricing, that's why they're not as common as Tacomas or 4Runners. You can purchase and fully outfit a Tacoma...

Upgrading Stock 2018 Hilux for Long trips on extremely bad roads in Africa

Lower pressure will make the tire more prone to sidewall slices and blowouts, specially when added weight. I normally run around 32-35psi depending on how heavy my truck is.

Upgrading Stock 2018 Hilux for Long trips on extremely bad roads in Africa

Pretty much all 255/85 tires are load range e's, so no problem with added weight there. The simple OME lifts should be able to hold up very well in harsh conditions. They work for us down here and our roads are crappy as can get. Hitting large potholes at 50-70 when unavoidable haven't yielded...

    255/85R16 ST/Maxx dilemma

I don't have Cooper ST Maxx's, but I did have the original STs in 255/85 and they never wore well. I am very careful when taking care of my tires: allignment, balancing, rotation. I never got them to wear well. They seemed to have a mix of cupping and feathering. I changed tires a long while...

Is a swing out tire carrier worth it, or more of a PITA than it is worth?

If you don't use one, you'll find that opening the rear hatch of a vehicle that has one is annoying. Specially if you have two swingouts. However, if you decide on it, you get used to it pretty quick. Off course it involves extra effort and fiddling, but it takes a couple of seconds to open the...

    Firestone Tires....Any Good ?

I've had three sets of Firestone Destination ATs. I've changed them out at 60.000 miles each with useable tread left. No complaints, work well for 80% highway driving 20% off road driving, mostly on gravel and sand. Excellent tires.

Is Diesel Being Villainized In AUS and NZ Like In The Rest Of The World?

I have developed an opinion based on road experience. I haven't owned a diesel, and i'm no engineer either. Diesel down here is super dirty, trucks and buses have ZERO emissions controls and their pollution is immediately noticeable. Commuting on motorcycles will teach you a quick lesson on...

Seat covers (cloth/synthetic) OVER leather seats?

I had nylon waterproof covers over leather seats and didnt really like the feel. I don't feel covers are needed with leather seats. They don't stain as easily and handle water just fine. I used the same covers with cloth seats and wouldn't dare take them off to risk damaging the OEM cloth.

    entry level HT Transceiver

Baofengs are hit or miss. You'll get a bunch of threads if you search this site. I never had trouble with mine. It worked pretty well, actually. They're a little hard to understand, but there are plenty of guides on the internet for programming and setting them up. That being said, I replace...

Extended Range Fueling Options: Opinions Needed

Before I say anything, I have no idea where the fuel tank on a TJ is located, its capacity or dimensions/vulnerabilities. That being said, I would recommend a custom-made, higher capacity fuel cell, if that's possible. Preferably with an external, generic, easy-to-source-and-replace pump. this...
