7 years around Africa in a Landy :: African Wildlife Films :: roamingyak

Yes please spend years editing and get them up ASAP. I enjoy the natural history and your interactions with the few people you encounter in the bush or during Landy maintenance and repairs. Having spent lots of time in the SW US deserts and in those of NW MX I am intrigued with the similarities...

7 years around Africa in a Landy :: African Wildlife Films :: roamingyak

So happy you are back to publishing your experiences. Due to your example I’ve lost 6 kg since you showed the skinny Darrin. Another 8 or so would look better on me! Thanks and welcome back.

    Favorite Swiss Army Knives?

I carry an Ambassador every day along with my Leatherman wave. The Ambassador is a larger version of the tiny Classic and has a full sized toothpick and tweezers. It’s good for fingernail trimming and filing, removing ticks and slivers, cutting small stuff, getting that broccoli your wife points...

    12v portable fridge

I’ve got 5 years of experience with Alpicool. One rides in the back seat of my Tacoma all the time and serves several purposes. It goes below freezing for ice cream, then at 38º it transports refrigerated food home on hot days, It delivers cold beer to camp, and at a bit higher temperature...

    Using an ipad with cellular

I’ve used both an iPad with cellular and one w/o on remote trips in the SW. In the area I’ve gone there is no cell service so in either case I downloaded the needed maps (topo's in my case) and turned the cell off to conserve the battery on the cell enabled iPad. Then the topo program showed...

Anyone connect the vehicle GPS antenna to an iPad??

I tried to do what you are thinking about 4 years ago and finally in frustration I went the same route as the Gentleman mep1811. It has worked well. I usually download a bunch of Topo maps prior to really remote trips. It works well.

    Omni’s stove top oven

I have a near identical oven from the 1970’s and have some experience with it. It’s great for muffin mixes (or your favorite scratch recipe), brownies, cakes and even Calzone-like rolled dough with fillings. We were a family of 4 so it works for that with deserts but two of us can eat anything...

    EV acceptance is peaking

I’d buy a small (first gen) Tacoma sized pickup if it had a reasonable sized cab like the later access cabs with small rear doors, a range of 250 miles, the ability to tow 5,000 lbs and carry 1,000. My price point would be low $30,000 out the door. Right now no one even makes an ICE truck that...

Diesel Heater Ducting? What to use?

Yes PVC pipe gets soft and deforms not really melted. The black corrugated/silver pipe they come with is fine. The heater’s housing must be made of something with a higher melting temp?

Has anybody seen this popup mechanism before?

I had that same model custom built. I pushed one side out then the other. My wife could not raise the roof but I didn’t find it too bad. Mine was all aluminum framed and the roof was not that heavy. I'd go with 4 actuators with limit switches when open or closed run off a HD DPDT momentary...

    SOLD 2002 4Runner 4X4 from AZ/NH-$8,450 244K miles, Gilmanton, NH

Sold the 4Runner to a committed 3rd Gen owner. We are both happy. I do have a tinge of seller’s remorse. I’ll never find as nice a replacement.

    SOLD 2002 4Runner 4X4 from AZ/NH-$8,450 244K miles, Gilmanton, NH

244K miles, if it was less I’d ask more! I’m on a forum for Casita Trailers and a poster there has the same rig- 2002 4Runner and 2003 Casita trailer he full times in. I asked him if I ought to think twice before pulling it cross country and he told me his 4Runner has 425K trouble free miles on...

    SOLD 2002 4Runner 4X4 from AZ/NH-$8,450 244K miles, Gilmanton, NH

This 2002 4Runner spent much of it’s life in the dry Sonoran Desert where even bare metal doesn’t rust. It was used as the daily driver by a member of the family that has owned it since new in 2002. There are 244K miles on it. It has had rigorous maintenance preformed since new. It was also used...

Best method for attaching flexible solar to roof

I’ve been thinking of a pair of these from a respected maker with tape already installed. One for each side of my Casita 17” Spirit Deluxe running in parallel. It would seem they must have tested the tape and found it works and lasts.

    Quality 12V Kettle

I ended up with a smaller 16 oz one that heated water to 170º in 10 minutes. Cheep china product though it worked well. The cord got warm. I did not find what you are looking for. I had 215 A-h of battery fed by 200 W of solar. It used about 10 A-h IIRC

Starting out Lightweight Dual-Sport. Want to stay light + simple. Recommendations for Jacket + Pant?

Over the years (30+) of buying specialized M/C riding gear I settled on FirstGear jacket and pants. Yes I know there are more expensive ones but for me this hit the sweet spot. I've ridden in AZ heat, cross country, all New England weather, Maritime Provinces etc. Not strictly summer or winter...

Will we be seeing truck prices come down in the near future?

I am hoping the diagnosing software becomes ubiquitous like the ODB2 adoption in the early ’90’s. That really made diagnosing easier then back when we had non-computerized vehicles. My now sold 2015 Ram van was easy. Of course the ODB2 was a requirement due to the propriety software proceeding...
