How Could You Do This to Your Child? Defining Our Parenting Philosophy

Yes, these are challenges that can seem insurmountable. But from experience I can say they aren't. My husband was a self-described "steel and concrete" guy when I met him 19 years ago, most comfortable on the streets of New York City and wouldn't be caught dead camping. Now he lives in a Jeep...

How Could You Do This to Your Child? Defining Our Parenting Philosophy

Thank you for your response. I'm not familiar with Rotary Youth Exchange. How often would you be away from home in another country? My husband was involved in Seattle's children's choir when he was 10 or so, and they did a performance tour in Japan. His memories of that visit, and what he...

How Could You Do This to Your Child? Defining Our Parenting Philosophy

Yes, thank you. We couldn't agree more. It isn't only our son who benefits from this kind of education. My husband and I are constantly having our assumptions challenged and growing as human beings.

How Could You Do This to Your Child? Defining Our Parenting Philosophy

I confess that your short response is often my mental go-to. Even though it's hard, I think open communication is the better response. When it comes to other ways of doing things, the honest truth is that many people never ever consider the possibilities. By being willing to put myself out...

How Could You Do This to Your Child? Defining Our Parenting Philosophy

Only the negative stories about anything make the news. The stories of success, which are much more common, aren't sensational enough. It is why there are still so many misconceptions about and biases against homeschooling, not to mention international overlanding.

How Could You Do This to Your Child? Defining Our Parenting Philosophy

Perhaps. But when I teach at Overland Expo, I still see majority men traveling without their wife and children, even though they often wish the whole family participated together. I've seen this gradually changing over the past few years, but there are still barriers to overcome.

How Could You Do This to Your Child? Defining Our Parenting Philosophy

As full-time international overlanders, starting out on a 10- to 15-year drive around the world, we get a LOT of questions about our parenting philosophy. Our son Caspian just turned five and this lifestyle is all he knows (we've been traveling the U.S. full-time since 2014). We get asked about...

    Mobile Internet

I doubt ours is sold anymore--we got it back in 2018. Here are some of the current options in an article dated August 2020: https://www.rvmobileinternet.com/gear/verizon-orbic-mobile-hotspot/. Yes, video calls are fine provided you're in a coverage area. The Coverage? app is good for determining...

Modern truck camper for an adventurous family of five?

Just want to applaud you for looking for ways to get your kids outdoors and into more adventure. Choosing the right vehicle is a big decision, and I suggest you don't rush it. Do you have any local overland groups or overland shops you can check out? I wouldn't say five in a truck camper is...

    Smaller camp stoves?

It really is amazing how many meals only take one burner. I got the Jetboil two-burner Genesis, but I've used both burners maybe twice? (Had it for two and a half years, including 4,000 miles overlanding through Mexico.) And while I'm no chef, I don't consider my meals overly simplistic. ;)

Sleeping Bag Alternative for Long-term International Trip

Thanks, everyone! You've given me several ideas to consider. Maybe I am overthinking it, but we won't have access to U.S. products for a long time once we go south of the border and I have a four-year-old to consider, so I definitely want to get this right!

Sleeping Bag Alternative for Long-term International Trip

I really appreciate your thoughts. We plan on overlanding Central America, South America, Africa, Europe, Asia, and Australia for the next 10-15 years. I'll look into bag liners, though I have to admit something in me is still pushing against the idea of a sleeping bag! Duly noted! I'll do my...

Sleeping Bag Alternative for Long-term International Trip

Hoping to benefit from your experience as I decide on bedding for a multi-year trip around the globe. I don't want to use a sleeping bag because A) it's really hard to wash properly on the road, out of the country, and B) it makes me feel like I'm camping, not at home. (Note: we'll be living in...

Check out our travels....We will be doing much more this year...and more off pavement trips too!

Don't we know it! We were planning to speak at all three Overland Expo events, as well as all three of Ray Hyland's events (Northwest Overland Rally, etc.). Ended up sheltering in place for six months in Seattle at my mother-in-law's. The only goal we met was completing visits/stays in our final...

Canadian Family of 4 Exploring the world in a Sprinter 4x4 during a pendemic: North America, Africa, Europe.. Asia (soon)

March-July, we'll be in the western U.S. building our Jeep Gladiator with Alu-Cab Canopy Camper. By late August, we plan to cross into interior Mexico. Central Mexico at the beginning of 2022, then South America, Africa, Europe, Asia, and Australia. We suspect to finish in 2031-2036, so...
