How Soon Before They’ll Be Coming For You? Busting Diesel Deleters Continues…

Asked a young diesel mechanic friend about this. His trucks 'roll coal'. He said that it is his way of protesting EPA overregulation. Wonder how the courts will handle that.

    Carb at high elevation

Put a manual choke on it. It will enrich the f/a mix almost like bigger jets. You loose some gas milage either way. The highest I ever used it was Minida pass (~6800ft).

Do you regret buying a base model truck?

If I were younger or if I didn't think my current 2012 Ram would last as long as I need it, my next truck would be pre-1970. I have enough experience building race cars, custom cars, classic cars, etc. to build a reliable truck that I can maintain. Too much gimmicky technology on the new ones...

    Toyota Losing it's Mojo?

Through 75 years of life I have learned that a history of reliability and quality does not transfer to the future. Designed in failures, both accidental and deliberate change the product. Or as they say in financial investments: "Past performance is no guarantee of future results."

Sleeping in vehicle in black bear country (what to do with food)

I keep food in my camper: FWC Grandby. I don't tempt fate, I don't cook inside (only boil water). My plan: 'early warning' beagle. He makes a racket and warns me so I'm ready (body language). If bear gets nosy - panic button on my key fob + outside lights. If bear tries to get in - shotgun...

    Paint Experts Needed!

Although I have painted cars I am no expert on paint. My advice is to go to an automotive paint store, preferably one that has multiple brands of paint and ask your questions. They will probably recommend you call a customer support engineer (they might give you a name & number). As with most...

How to mitigate truck box condensation

Silica gel (those little bead packets that come with electronics). It's used in gun safes to absorb moisture. Stores that sell guns (photography, crafts) should have it in bulk. There are on line calculators for how much you need based on volume. Can be dried and reused for a long time. The...

    NPS fines AWD owners…

A couple things to consider: The National Forest Service is a bureaucracy. And like all bureaucracies they tend to formulate regulations that require the least amount of effort on their part. The forest rangers that are making the rules are forest managers not off-roaders or motorheads. I...

    Is there life without propane?

Not hard. This is what I use: For heat: bunk heater, fuel = diesel, uses minimal electricity. For stove: MSR X-GK, fuel = white gas, no electric. For refrigeration: 2 cu.ft. upright 120V run through inverter. This is what I have: 200W solar 210AH FLA batteries Runs fridge, furnace, lights...

    campsite pics..lets see um

Minnesota: a campsite like that would be swarming with mosquitoes at this time of year. How do you cope?

    Fan to mitigate dust

I have used my MaxxFan for 8 years to create positive pressure in camper while on dusty roads. I drive slow and don't follow someone kicking up dust. I also made sure the back of my camper was air tight. Light isn't a good indicator as it will not turn corners, while air currents will...

Does HP trump range on a loaded EV Pickup?

1 Horsepower = 746 Watts Some of us can't afford a specialized vehicles. A truck that can pull a 15,000 lb trailer 4,000 miles gets around town just fine. An econobox that gets around town efficiently can't pull a 15,000 lb trailer down my driveway. When I was working 50% of my miles were...

Fisker Files For Chap 11 Bankruptcy Today

It depends on whose data you believe. Both side in this debate use data most favorable to their side of the argument. The reality is there hasn't been enough EV's scrapped to have a clear picture of end-of-life costs and not enough volume to know the environmental costs of increased resource...

    Looking for Tents

Both my tents are at least 40 years old so naming brands wouldn't be helpful. But with 60 years of tenting experience here is what I would look for: All tents: - stable in wind; worrying if your tent is going to blow away isn't conducive to good sleep or a day hike. - Taut; flapping in wind...

Fisker Files For Chap 11 Bankruptcy Today

One of the reasons (among many) that I would not consider buying an EV now is the volatility in the market. Looking at early 1900s there were over 100 companies making cars; most didn't last long. Is it still off-roading/overlanding if there are convenient fuel stations along the route? Do we...

Frustrated Dealers May Succeed in Getting Corp to Reduce Ram Truck and Jeep Prices

My last years of working as an engineer I was involved in cross disciplined new product design meetings. Sales and marketing would always insist on a new look, claiming that our base market would buy our product if it looked the same but we get a sales boost from those buyers that will buy...

DustBox - dust mitigation device - positive pressure system

Used mine for 8 years this way. AND forgetting about it being open traveling down the freeway at speed. AND in 50+MPH crosswinds in Wyoming and South Dakota. YMMV. I should clarify that 1/2 way is a very rough estimate. I simply crank it open a little. Does the MaxxFan still draw outside air...

DustBox - dust mitigation device - positive pressure system

I open it about 1/2 way. Sometimes on washboard it will open up all the way; hasn't hurt it yet.

DustBox - dust mitigation device - positive pressure system

I just use my MaxxFan on medium speed. My camper has the old 2 panel, crank out jalousie windows that don't seal at all. No dust intrusion on dusty roads. One could add a filter easily, if desired.

Tarp Under Tent - Common Practice?

Except where there are biting insects or blowing debris (sand, dirt, snow, driving rain, etc.). Or when you have to carry poles to erect. Used both. Advantages and disadvantages to each.
