Merc 1124 AF Touring in Europe

Neil, would love any tips. Without a UK bank account we have been unable to buy any of the magic boxes for tolls. Credit card worked in France, most of the time. 😉

Merc 1124 AF Touring in Europe

Dude! If you can handle the UK, the EU is easy. “The Wandering Bird “ website (https://www.wandering-bird.com/) has lots of tips for UK motorhomers. Bottom line, every thing is wider and taller. 😝

    EC Bathroom Layout Question

Rumor has it that Sandy's son did not do a great job with the company. We actually visited the factory to see if the C-Head would fit out tiny bath. It did and had the great advantage over the Nature's Head that you could lift the bucket out without needing a cover - it fit through the doors...

    EC Bathroom Layout Question

Fixed cassette odor by installing a composting toilet. EXPANDED: Had a Natures Head on our first camper. Next one had a cassette. Though, "How bad can it be?" Replaced it with a C-Head. Still have the C-Head. Still use it. Still no odor.

    Velit 12v AC?

Boy, that REALLY looks like the Houghton, which is one of the more efficient 110v units. I wonder ...

    Redarc BCDC Sizing

Makes sense. Start with a BCDC 1250D and upgrade if/when you need.

    Redarc BCDC Sizing

FWIW, a friend who also uses REDARC toys reports that REDARC suggested a Manager 30 paired with a BCDC1250D for his new camper - to give some 80A of charge. I have NOT tested this and would not attempt it without an iron clad assurance from your dealer that they will take things back should it...

    Redarc BCDC Sizing

Short answers - always better too big than too small. Your 1.5Kw inverter will soon grow to a 3 Kw inverter, your cooler will become a fridge, and fans will blossom and thus your 150Ah battery will be replaced with a 270Ah. So get the BCDC1250D and also look at the "Manager" line for more...

    Shore power 120 & 220

Had to bang my head against the wall a few times before I fully got this! (And I lived in 220v countries most of my life!) By definition, an inverter/charger cannot be multi-voltage, as it passes power directly via a transfer switch. That would send 220v to your 110v appliances. (Or 110v to...

    Shore power 120 & 220

Ouch! Had not thought of forest fires; with have "only" 640w. I was amazed at how much solar performance fell off in the Fall. And annoyed that my alternator charging is not working properly. (Hopefully will have that sorted in the New Year.) While I like as much independence as possible, I...

    Shore power 120 & 220

AFAIK: -- US residential power is two 110v phases and a neutral. This gives you 110v at the outlet and 208v, phase to phase, for electric stoves and dryers. -- I am guessing that UK/EU is 220v phase to neutral with a ground. Don't know if there is any way to split a phase in this setup, but my...

    Shore power 120 & 220

Hey Peter! We once went some 18 months without shore power as a proof of concept. Some things we learned: -- You can do it, even with an all electric camper, as long as you have enough battery to carry between rains and enough solar to recharge. --Some (all?) lead acid batteries need a really...

    Shore power 120 & 220

You miss the point. My appliances are 120v as well. Charge yer batteries and use your inverter. Works much better than a transformer. Also limits your draw on often undersized 220v service. My Victron draws less than 4A @220v. Also obviates frequency issues.

    Shore power 120 & 220

Scholars differ. After looking at all of the options (and having spent half of my life living in a 220v world) I simply added another charger. Has worked perfectly and, as I bought the 110v/220v model, it even gives me a backup when in the US. I bought a Victron IP43 Charger, but the exact...

A bit extreme, but we have a dedicated B2B that uses our camper battery to charge our starter batteries. Like many people, our truck sits for months at a time in storage. There are a few tricks needed to make this work, specifically a normally "off" relay and a normally "on" relay, but, other...

1990s MB truck owners. Looking for some details!!

Your comments on gearing, transmission, tire size, and engine match my experience. I have a 5-speed 917 with 385/60x22.5 tires. Happiest at about 85-90 kph, but can bog on hills. The gear mismatch means that I would love one gear that wasn't as far down from top gear and one overdrive gear for...

Misc replies: -- Battery bank is a home brew of 840Ah, made up of 280Ah cells. Actually three 12v batteries in parallel, each with 120A Overkill Solar BMS. -- I sourced the alternator through Nations Starter and Alternator (https://www.nationsstarteralternator.com/) in the US and replaced it...

    Meertruck 1124AF

Some random electrical points: -- This spring, with 4x160w panels and 840Ah of battery, we had to charge about once a month, and one of those probably wasn't really necessary. Now, in the fall, our solar charge has dropped to less than one half what we were getting before. While there is always...
