Probably better to have a sub frame that is swapable. unbolt one, jack the trailer, roll it out, roll in the new one lower and bolt it on.

You can do that if you used a dc to dc charger. This allows the trailer battery to see the voltage it wants to charge correctly. It also allows limits on how much the alternator tries to put to the trailer battery, like limit it to 10 to 20 amps ( typically ) depending on the charger.
