Small is expensive. If one wants cheaper, then one of the non slide in "topper" style truck campers would be a better deal, the Project M etc types. I hope they work out. Seems to be one of the areas in RV land that isn't retracting right now.

Tall is a PITA in cities too. No parking garages or carports, for instance. And offroad it can be a headache. But you can work around it; lots of bigger trucks do. And maybe your offroading won't be that difficult. Still, helps if it's light and tall vs heavy and tall too.

You are going to need to set some priorities. Even more so when and if the child comes. If the priority is get over tough trails, then no camper. Use tents. And maybe a smaller vehicle, although you've already got a large crew. If the priority is comfortable camping, maybe a bigger HD truck...
