Built-in Ambulance Heater/AC question and mod ideas

Would you be able to use an A/C compressor from an EV or hybrid vehicle. I swear I read somewhere that someone was trying to use a EV compressor for their campervan or skoolie. I just cant find the forum that I read it on. I dont know much about A/C systems but will have to start on mine soon.

Red Cross ERV 4x4 camper build

Just got it back from alignment at cal suspension in Salinas, Ca. After many phone calls they were the only shop I could find locally to be able to get an alignment done on something as tall and heavy as my van. They were quick and super willing to answer any questions I had.

Red Cross ERV 4x4 camper build

She’s back from the shop! It’s much bigger that I could have imagined but I like it. Rock hound did a killer job. On the way home I noticed the rear tires rub when I hit large bumps so I’ll fix that with the sawzall but besides that it’s perfect.

Red Cross ERV 4x4 camper build

That is quite a difference! There wasn’t too much in the back besides a bed and a sink. The boxes must be built differently between the different manufacturers. I plan to remodel the inside this summer and strip everything down to the studs, I’m curious to see how they built it.

Red Cross ERV 4x4 camper build

Yes it is. Amtech built ERVs for Red Cross before Wheeled Coach and I’ve noticed the Amtech builds have the cab roof cut.

Red Cross ERV 4x4 camper build

I changed my mind on the tires and decided to go with Mickey Thompson Baja Boss 255/85R17s. They are the biggest 10" wide tire I could find and they have the 3 peak mountain snowflake rating that I want. They are currently on national backorder but RimzOne.com found me 7 blemished ones and sent...

Van Advice: Used 4x4 vs. 2WD and conversion

I am by no means an expert but I have been doing my fair share of research. I also do not have much experience with the Chevy Express/GMC Savana platform, I do know that Weldtec, Salem Kroger and Quigley have done 4x4 conversions on those if that's the route you chose to take. There may be more...

Red Cross ERV 4x4 camper build

Got the super duty mirrors mounted up, I replaced the side marker lenses with black ones for a cleaner look. I havent wired them up yet and I plan to take my time with that but I plan to wire the heaters to a ford explorer defrost switch that I found at the junkyard.

Red Cross ERV 4x4 camper build

The 99-07 ford super duty mirrors dont directly bolt up but I was able to get the econoline mirror mounts to fit the super duty mirrors so now, with some wiring, I can have heated mirrors. Below is a picture of the final product, Super duty mirrors with econoline mounts. The mirrors themselves...

Red Cross ERV 4x4 camper build

I purchased my axle from Chris at Ujoint. 02-04 leaf sprung Dana 60 with 4.56 Detroit True Trac, Spyntec 8X6.5 hubs, SSBC 8 piston brake calipers & treated rotors, and front dually wheel adapters. That way my one spare wheel will work for either axle. For a moment I thought about using a...

Red Cross ERV 4x4 camper build

Last year I began looking for some type of vehicle to take camping in the snow since my girlfriend and I really enjoy snowboarding and annually travel the country to ride new spots. I saw some RVs that Ujoint built up and that started the whole rabbit hole effect. I wanted a diesel 4x4 and the...

My 4x4 Red Cross ERV Build and Adventures

When I've asked, the general consensus was to install a linelock which essentially holds the brake pressure to the brakes. I havent heard of anyone having issues with it but I'm convinced theres a better way. 2009-2014 E450s have a "drum in hat" style parking brake and I've been playing with the...

What did you have to do to the trans? It was my understanding that the E450s come installed with a 4x4 trans in order to use the driveline parking brake.

    1996 E350 ambulance 7.3 powerstroke quigley 4x4

The mileage is a typo, 140,000 not 14000. If I didn’t already have a project going on I’d snag this up. 10 days left on the auction and current price is $5100 (reserve not met) https://www.govdeals.com/index.cfm?fa=Main.Item&itemid=4&acctid=4196

My 4x4 Red Cross ERV Build and Adventures

I believe the dodge wheels have a center bore of 121mm so I’ll need to throw them on the lathe to match the Ford hubs. I’ll buy one first and see if it works out and if so I’ll do all 6. I have yet to see anyone do this so it’ll be a bit of an experiment

My 4x4 Red Cross ERV Build and Adventures

You’ve sparked my interest, and now I’m on the hunt for 17s with an 8x6.5 bolt pattern to replace my 16s and not use any spacers or adapters. Looks like Dodge Ram 3500 wheels from 03-18 should work. Thanks for the inspiration

My 4x4 Red Cross ERV Build and Adventures

Did your ERV come with 17" wheels? Mine came with 16s but there are more tire options in 255/80 R17 vs 255/85 R16
