Express/Savana Swing-out Tire Carrier DIY Starter

exactly...the idea being these heavy duty body attachments will bear the load rather that an expensive/elaborate heavy duty bumper that has to extend around the body and up just to clear the door swing or just attaching something to/through the door which isn't built to handle that kind of...

Express/Savana Swing-out Tire Carrier DIY Starter

So I confess that a big draw of these swing outs was that I've had a set of tube hinges that I won in a pirate4x4 giveaway like 7yrs ago...I've tried selling them a half dozen times and never got an offer...so I see this hoop and I'm like...oh yeah...I got just the thing for those.. And the...

    Johny5's stealth camper van

8.5" is about what anyone doing this should plan for if they want any kind of good compression travel. I used a swaybar from my donor 3500 box van (14900gvwr) it is stiffer by a long shot than it needs to be, even at 10ft tall I get zero body roll. I moved my steering box forward to relieve some...

    24" Hightop Express Rear Build-out

I'm just going to stick with using magnets and strikers to latch them in place. I'm going to use these pulls: https://www.boatoutfitters.com/grey-flush-pull-handle-3-625x2-375-inches

Express/Savana Swing-out Tire Carrier DIY Starter

No plans for a ladder. It's 10ft to the top of my hightop, I'm not putting anything else up there other that flexible solar panels so I really wouldn't have a need to access it other than washing which I'll do with a wand and moving a step ladder around. I still haven't settled on latch...

    24" Hightop Express Rear Build-out

Got the offset piano hinges in and cut and installed faces for the galley cabinet. This last sheet of birch plywood was from a different batch and has way more color/grain that the others...not a huge deal, I probably should have paid more attention to that when I was getting that last sheet...

Express/Savana Swing-out Tire Carrier DIY Starter

I got tired of the "wood-work" and switched back on to this. Got my new Buyers box in...they build the $hit out these things...if you need a box these are beast! Got the rear stripped down so I have access to the door hinge mount points and got a little start on a wood template for a lower...

New here in need of some direction

you didn't mention what engine the chevy had, if it is the 7.4 or 8.1 big block(could be either for an 01) that would be enough to tip the scales. if the 5.7 it will be reliable enough, but, power limited as soon as you add more weight with the build out.. 8th digit in the VIN will tell it...

Van Compass Ford Transit Build - 1 TON 4x4 conversion

whomever builds an adapter for the new GM/Ford 10spd 2wd version to the standard NV/NP t-case pattern (with 23/32spline input options) is going to be in high demand, that trans is going to be the "go to" in the next 10yrs of project building..

Express/Savana Swing-out Tire Carrier DIY Starter

In a rare moment of clarity, I decided to keep it simple and do very much what you did, just with a slightly smaller box. I'll do a railing like you did and carry the generator on it (I'll build in some security restraint to keep it from getting nicked). I wen't with steel, I'm in socal so I...

Express/Savana Swing-out Tire Carrier DIY Starter

I'm also kicking around the idea of using a trailer tongue box and just cutting in a lower front hinged opening to allow access to the generator and still have room for "other stuff"...cause there's always plenty of that.. this one...

Express/Savana Swing-out Tire Carrier DIY Starter

That's a size(18x18x30) that I've been looking at, and considering the same type of open storage above. Are you happy with the sturdiness/construction of the Buyers box?

Express/Savana Swing-out Tire Carrier DIY Starter

Trying to plan this out a bit, on one side I'm going to mount my spare, on the other I want a fairly good sized storage box; something like an underbody tool box on big trucks where the face folds down and something large enough that I could maybe get a small 2000watt generator in there if I...

    24" Hightop Express Rear Build-out

Got the rest of the bed base panels cut out and installed and about half of the galley cabinet as well, I'm using magnets to attach all the panels that I want to be removable(still need to hit the corners with the 1/2" belt sander to clean up the welds a bit more). I ran about a half sheet of...

designing the latch to be quick and easy is something I'm still working on; I don't want it to be an evolution every time I want to open the doors..

Express/Savana Swing-out Tire Carrier DIY Starter

For those of you that are not on the FB groups for Express Vans and 4wd Vans, this guy is making both drivers and passenger side contoured tire carrier hoops for the Express/Savana. I bought a drivers side right after he first posted them and the fit to the body is excellent, I used that one to...

    High-Roof Rehab!?

the stress cracks in the gel coat are hard to fix, you have to get all the way behind the gel coat to get rid of them, I'd probably clean them out a bit with a small dremel bit and epoxy them then feather it back in....it's a lot of work..
