How Weather Resistant are Rubbermaid ActionPackers?

My experience is a little different than others... I have an actionpacker (the medium size) on my roof rack w/chains, tools, jumper cables, etc. In the groove on the lid I added 3/4 foam strip (used for weatherproofing around windows). It's been on the roof for 2 Pacific Northwest Winters...

[Android] Back Country Navigator vs. Gaia GPS vs. Trimble Outdoor Naviagtor??

I've used all three at some point or another, and have settled on BCM (on my Nexus 7). I haven't used Trimble or Gaia for probably a year or more. The Trimble app was horrible at the time, it may have gotten better, but realistically, BCM does all that you ask. The interface is pretty good...

    Google Nexus 7 tablet

I just got back from an all-day drive using my nexus for mapping... I had it tucked up in my dash with no visible view of the sky - it didn't drop a signal even once. Hope that helps Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2

    Google Nexus 7 tablet

I just put in a pre-order for this. Says 2-3 weeks for delivery, I'm curious if it will actually show up on time :) This will be replacing my hacked B&N Nook...same general size and both run android. I run BCN + Torque in the truck when I use it for overlanding. I'll load everything up on...

    Reserving a campsite/RTT

Two scenarios here... Campsite first-come first-served...leave something substantial in the site, like a small tent and chair obviously placed. A friend and I were camping at a campground once, found a great site, got all set up (he had 25' trailer, so setup was no small feat)...found some...

Upgrading my expedition GPS Navigation System

There are different TOPO programs out there...National Geographic TOPO!, Delorme TOPO, etc. I use most of them, with either a bluetooth 'puck' a Garmin 60Cs, a Montana, or a USB 'puck' - the best 'inexpensive' solution, especially running on a netbook, is to get Delorme Topo 8 (runs $50 on...

How to make a cheap isolated dual-battery setup for $50

#1 - I'm not sure. I've never checked mine to see if it disengages while actually starting the truck. If it doesn't disengage, you could hypothetically be 'mini jump starting' your battery if you just turn it on and don't start the truck right away. #2 - Depending on the type of isolator, they...

How to make a cheap isolated dual-battery setup for $50

I use Microsoft Visio...and a bunch of google image searches. Could do a whole schematic diagram if I wanted (plenty of stencils of electrical circuits) but I like the pictures, makes it really easy to visualize.

How to make a cheap isolated dual-battery setup for $50

I have basically the same set, been running them from the engine bay to rear of my rig for quite a few years. They run exposed along the frame rail and I haven't seen any abrasion that's anything close wearing through (except where I ran them too close to the exhause :)).

How to make a cheap isolated dual-battery setup for $50

Time for another update!!! Thanks to dwh, we now have fully grounded switches in our cab! Please note that you can't run the switch power off a Duracell battery - that is for illustrational porpoises only! I caught an error myself - remember to use the same gauge wire for ground that you use...

    Best Android Overlanding software?

BCN will automatically download maps if you are online. If you scroll around to where you will be offline it will 'cache' those maps. A better way is to use the built-in 'download' feature that allows you to select large areas of a map and download them before going offline. Click the down...

How to make a cheap isolated dual-battery setup for $50

Been out on a work trip...let's get some updates going! Here's an updated basic diagram, with the fuses for the solar array (buy two panels, then start calling it your solar array, people will think you are either really cool or some diabolical madman bent on world domination) Now some...

    06 H3's build thread

The more the better! I won the Washington Rally and sucked ***** at the California Rally (7 of 10, really? yes, I was a big no show)...the prospect of breaking things 1,000 miles from home after an already-long road trip made me chicken out on the obstacle portion :)

Columbia releases Android and iOS app - GPS PAL

So some feedback on this app... Couldn't even get it to work effectively on my Motorola Atrix - it kept force-closing, so that was pretty much a dud. Just picked up a HTC One X this weekend and installed the app - it doesn't seem to force-close, so gonna take it out on a trail run later this...

    06 H3's build thread

Love your H3 and it's great to see it progress from stock to even more capable wheeler. You should look into coming to the Overland Rally in Hollister in October. I went last year and had a great time, no other Hummer's though :( I may go again this year, vacation schedules depending. Would...

NDT and NDCC tires ok for M416 towed at highway speeds?

I know absolutely nothing about tires, tubes, etc. But I've pulled my trailer using these same tires from Washington State to California 3x times, sometimes for 100s of miles at 75+. I've had the trailer for 4 years, and the tires looked pretty worn when I got it :) I run 10psi off-road and...

    Pretty amazing Hummer trailer

Trolling? Nah, potstirring? Yes :) Trolling implies I came and dropped some random derogatory comment and provided no value to the community. I've been around for 5 years and have seen the community go from a pretty great place to have positive conversations - not just 'yes' - lots of...
