Talk Me Out of an OBS as a budget overlanding rig!

It's all relative I suppose, but say I didn't want the $200 leveling keys and I wanted a different lift or I wanted an option to run a long travel kit or a full coilover setup up front. How many skid plates offerings are there for the truck? Can I get Fox Shocks if I don't want Bilstein? Are...

    Chevy 6.5l Turbo Diesel.

We have the 6.5 in our skoolie. It’s been really good to us and mileage without anything on the roof and staying out of the gas has been 13-15 hwy. Keep an eye on the cooling system but other than that I would just enjoy it.

Pics of your VAN! Post up!

Some photos from the last year on the road. When we get back stateside in May the bus will be getting some much needed love, rehab, and upgrades! Plans include a rear sway bar, 2 inch lift, an oven, additional house batteries, kitchen rebuild to better fit our travel style and some cosmetic...

Chevrolet Express / GMC Savana RWD Van Info thread (All years / 1500, 2500, 3500)

Is it any more work to swap in a solid axle front? Ride quality is the only thing that will really suffer vs ifs right?

Talk Me Out of an OBS as a budget overlanding rig!

Yeah I saw that one and we are not in a hurry to buy, mostly planning for the future. We still absolutely plan to take our 2WD skoolie to Alaska next year. Just trying to learn as much as I can and plan as much as possible.

Chevrolet Express / GMC Savana RWD Van Info thread (All years / 1500, 2500, 3500)

This might be silly question but if I was interested in swapping 4x4 from a donor 1ton 4x4 truck of the same vintage, what would need to be custom and what would swap over?

Talk Me Out of an OBS as a budget overlanding rig!

After settling on the bus we bought, I will likely make sure the next rig is exactly what we want, including 4x4. That is basically the idea though. Throw a slide in on the bed and build some boxes around the sides and hit the road!

Talk Me Out of an OBS as a budget overlanding rig!

Thanks for taking the time to post that. I have been digging into the changes that happened around the 2000 mark and it's quite amazing how much old tech was still on the road. You have me considering newer models! Check out our current bus, it is exactly what you describe only 2WD and DRW...

Talk Me Out of an OBS as a budget overlanding rig!

That is Thats is essentially our plan. Find a lowish mike truck, flatbed it and throw a slide in on the bed with storage boxes on the side the head to Patagonia. Now I need to go drive one of these trucks.

If you make it down, my wife and I will be near the National Observatory until mid April and in San Felipe the rest of April. We would love to buy you a beer and check out your setup. We are interested in moving into something similar to yours. Safe travels!

Talk Me Out of an OBS as a budget overlanding rig!

Thanks for your input on the mileage. I expected somewhere between 10-15, but less than 10 is less than ideal. The real reason for considering the diesel was parts availability out of country. The 7.3 seems to be more recognizable and popular in the developing world making parts easier to...

Talk Me Out of an OBS as a budget overlanding rig!

My wife and I live on the road full time in one of our two rigs: either the 4 window school bus or our 1986 4Runner with the roof top tent. One is more comfortable, the other is far more capable. Things we like about the skoolie: It is 100% self sustainable. We have solar, water, inverter...

    2000 Xterra NW Montana...

Great platform, pretty capable out of the box. I only added warn hubs, 265/75/16 AT's and a po mans lift and it would go just about anywhere. This was right after the shackle lift and right before the 32's.

Fantastic max fans, why are they loved so much?

We have the base model Fantastic Fan in our skoolie and love it. We use it when cooking and any time the temp gets above 75 or so and it works great. We have had zero complaints so far. Owned it a little over a year, I guess time will tell.
