Ford OBS 7.3 manual trans or 1998-2003 manual trans 4x4 for overlanding? F250 or F350

Yeah for a while I thought they were unicorns, and while still very rare it's been pointed out to me that they are apparently more popular/available in the mid west for some reason. . Edit I think Neil is right, I can't be sure I don't look for them. . Ahhh now this is likely to start...

Ford OBS 7.3 manual trans or 1998-2003 manual trans 4x4 for overlanding? F250 or F350

Can I play? . The D50 stock definitely has a harsher ride, this is due to a very VERY small amount of up travel, the distance to the bump stop is only like an inch, and that's if the springs aren't worn. . Maintenance, a third U-joint, 2 more seals, tires wear faster due to changes in toe, and...

Ford OBS 7.3 manual trans or 1998-2003 manual trans 4x4 for overlanding? F250 or F350

I don't put down the TTB as much as most do, it's a solid concept as front axles go. As IdaSHO said the 1/2 ton version is quite good, though it still suffers alignment issues do to the Y steering linkage. But toss in a full swing and your golden. The D50 on the other hand is a dismal failure...

Ford OBS 7.3 manual trans or 1998-2003 manual trans 4x4 for overlanding? F250 or F350

I own 3 OBS(kinda there 86-91 rigs) Crew Cab Long Box(CCLB) F350s, several other OBS Ford trucks, 2 rigs with 7.3/5speed, my brother has a 01 7.3 - 6 speed ex-cab. My take.... . Obviously I prefer the older style, but I also prefer the older tech, it has it's advantages, and don't mind an older...

    Moving 7,000lbs...rims & tires ?

That means the 37x13.5R17 Toyo Open Country MT, I'm looking at that tire myself, looks fantastic, the specs are awesome. 4300lbs and a Q speed rating in a 37" mud tire with a good reputation, fantastic. Having a heck of a time finding a wheel to pair with them though which frankly surprises me...

    Project "Autonomous" F-350

Yeah, probably money and certainly effort ahead to get the parts you need elsewhere vs. taking them from the crew cab. . That and are you now going dually, if not why not?

Transmission cover floor panel swaps, no cutting, just more bolts. . Consider a hydroboost swap when your swapping pedal assemblies anyway.

    Moving 7,000lbs...rims & tires ?

This is not true, there is no direct correlation. While I've never seen a 80psi or higher tire that wasn't rated a E or higher, there are plenty of "E" rated tires rated a 65psi or less. Nor can I recall seeing a D rated tire rated as high as 65psi. For the most part if it's 65 to 80 it's...

    Moving 7,000lbs...rims & tires ?

Style, tread, and size are all personal choices, nothing I can add, but... . 17 is now the size to have on a 4WD pickup that will see heavy loads. MUCH more styles, sizes, and heavier rated tires available. . NO don't just specify "E rating" E rating doesn't actually mean anything. Look at two...

    Project "Autonomous" F-350

FWIW I think you're setting yourself up for a lot of extra work, will miss the crew cab, and will find a lot of issues will pile up. Curious though, is that U-Haul F350 based or F-Superduty(F450) based, and which front suspension does it have, moonbeam leaf or TIB coil? I'm sure you've...

Fabricating a powered dust filtration system?

Idea for ya, might as well do a combination unit with a vacuum. I'm betting you'll appreciate a vacuum and with an air pump and filter you're half way there anyway. So why not do something like snag all the parts for the HondaVAC out of a wrecked Odyssey. Set it up in your new Oliver with the...

    Distributing the weight........a weighty matter

Only you can know that, keep in mind though it's not about just weight but location. If your engine is say 100lbs heavier that's offset buy say 60lbs on the rear bumper.

    Distributing the weight........a weighty matter

Concentrating on being front heavy is almost always better, even more so on a short rig like a zuk, and even more so for permanent items. Why, three reasons one was already mentioned, when you add cargo you add it to the back, need to plan for this so mount as much permanent weight as practical...

    Safety Items for Solo Travel?

FWIW in many locations a gun is more legal to posses then an expandable baton. In many places both are considered dangerous weapons and are illegal to normally conceal/carry, yet you can be permitted for the gun but not the baton.

    Safety Items for Solo Travel?

WOW that's hard to read, is grammar different in Canada? . Best I gather you're trying to say that an American can't take a handgun into Canada, this is not true. An American can get a 60 day "Non-Resident Firearms Declaration" which can include many pistols when driving through Canada to/from...

    Safety Items for Solo Travel?

While that might be true, it is Jeep after all, I really doubt it, all we are talking about is a hole or slot. Most are oblong slots like this http://s1298.photobucket.com/user/lurch6889/media/photo4_zps6f0f690b.jpg.html
