I had the same issues you you described,this is what I came up with,,

The great thing I like about a photo’s is they remind you how you feel when you were there , the small line in the foreground is the road.

As you can see in this photo I added some aluminum angle and 1/8 checker plate aluminum to the top ,it adds to the weight but it allows me to take photos from up there .
