Near Death on The North Rim !!!

I was thinking the same thing about the other trip report too, where they had to muck around a bit to get over the tree. A chain saw really is the only answer to this, good luck with an axe or bow saw, it can be done but at a big "time" cost, burning throught the tree will take soooo looong...

    BIG TRUCK - little budget

That is a nice find, lots of good usable stuff, seems like the truck would easily handle the weight of that unit, so with that said, I predict if you make a mock up with the unit and start using it and improving it as you go it will become you're permanent set up. So when you do the mock up...

MAN LE180C double cab for a long family trip

I'm not too familiar with 24 volt systems, but I would say if you are showing 20 volts instead of say 24-26volts those batteries are done. At 20 volts you have maybe less than 50% of the battery, no?

    Propex Heatsource furnace question

I had one in my westfalia, If I remember right it was a 2800 version, around 9000BTU. These units are fairly quiet, depending on where its mounted, I mounted mine under the bench seat so while sleeping on the bottom bunk its right under you, The fan is a nice squirrel cage type that will cycle...

    Interior lighting suggestions

I got all my LED fixtures at my local RV supplier, lots of variations to choose from with very bright to medium bright, also found some at Home depot, they were for under cabinet light and had some complicated transformer and switch that I eliminated and wired through a switch, these are very...

Expedition vehicle - how did you decided on yours

some great topics on these great threads, I havent seen any mention of "what is available for purchase" yet, so there you go, not really much to choose from in NA. If able to I might have gone with a 4x4 sprinter, or another 4x van that is larger than a westy. like a bremech or type like it...

C5500 TopKick 4x4 Crew Cab Build

I agree, I really like to be able to use a storage door as a bit of a shelf to lay stuff onto then store the stuff properly, makes things easier for sure, another consideration for me is to have a side hinge for select doors, to provide some weather protection (wind) when open for an outside...

Where to put a mounted spare wheel on my Merc 1823?

After you wrote "deck" I thought of Jay Shapiro's build, dunno if you have seen it. http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/8936-Eco-Roamer-F650-based-Expedition-Vehicle/page71

Where to put a mounted spare wheel on my Merc 1823?

looking at that rear lift in your picture, I would say 'that' would be the ideal location, unless the lift is used often?? Like you said the spare could be lowered easily to a usable height, and it would be plenty strong to support the weight, easy to make a solid mount for it, keeps it in the...

    Fuel Consumption

Hi Tom, is that in imperial or us gallons? Not sure where you are located? Maybe even state the type of camper, ie, mine is a rising top so when down its almost flush with the cab, I thought it would be the closest type for the original poster's question. i will guess that you are stateside...

    BIG TRUCK - little budget

If you havent checked out this thread on mounting you should, its all been talked about before and some different ideas are addressed. http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/25494-pivoting-frames-and-mounting-campers Also, something that never seems to come up, in some of these pictures...

    Ford F700 Build

Sort of but not exact, almost any shaped object with enough airflow over it will produce lift, a component of Bernoulli's law, even aircraft fuselages will generate lift (look at the side profile of the fuselage, shaped like a wing) the other component is Newton's laws, where air gets under...

How much off-road capability is enough?

I mounted a 2" hitch reciever for a winch on my westy, complicated install and never used it, before I put it on I got stuck and missed an important appointment, its like carrying an umbrella so that it doesn't rain!

How much off-road capability is enough?

This topic is again one of those "personal decision" items, where depending on what you ask of your vehicle and what kind of terrain you travel and many more factors. The simple fact is that you (who ever it may be ) will want a vehicle suited to you! Not someone else, I selected the vehicle of...

    Earthroamer review by experienced travelers

I dont understand the statement: "a strong camper shell (almost certainly composite construction), mounted using a 3 point mounting system, onto a 1-ton pickup, with an all up weight of 11,000-12,000 lbs would be a nearly ideal expedition vehicle." just seems to set up for an overloaded...

out with the old in with the new

Also made an aluminum box to house my espar hydronic heater, I know what you're saying,, you can buy those on Ebay for seventy bucks! but I wanted to get a little welding practice in so I made one. I was a little surprised at how hard it was to get a ninety degree bend in the 1/8" Al. Cover...

out with the old in with the new

For my holidays, I am taking a BC ferry where anything over twenty feet get an additional charge of $7 per foot, so normally I remove the rear rack by sitting it on a couple of saw horses, and drive away, but this time I wanted to do a little work on it, so I took a series of pics during the...
