Am i reading this correctly? 2016 taco still has rear drum brakes...

Moonshiner, nothing sparks a debate like boxed vs C-channel frames, in fact, I was heavily involved in a debate a month ago about the new F350. First of all, I'd like to say you brought up a LOT of good points, and I agree with most of them. Many people confuse stiffness with strength, and even...

    LR3 rock crawling carnage

Hmm, the fact that it started cracking near the weld makes me wonder if it's poor welding? Perhaps the joint was heat stressed too much (too fast cooling rate), but you'd think stuff like this is robotic, under perfect temp control... How heavy is your rig btw? Some of the control arm designs...

Am I crazy for wanting a rig that gets low 20's mpg ???

Depends on the part of course; no parts store is going to regular stock a transmission solenoid pack for the 6R80 off an F150, but they're much, much less likely to store one for a Delica. 3 days I would accept out in the boonies, as my food supply and batteries are likely to last that long...

Am I crazy for wanting a rig that gets low 20's mpg ???

My concern with JDM diesels is the lack of parts in remote towns when overlanding, especially if the model itself is not made here (Delica, Patrol, etc) Ironically, this is the reason they ARE chosen for international expeditions, because it's easier to get parts for them than UDM vehicles. I...

Overland on a Budget for the rest of us

Oh c'mon, that's not overlanding at all! Everyone knows you need an overpriced exclusive D110/JDM LC80 diesel, with customized armor to the max, rooftop tent and $1000 worth of jerry cans on an overloaded roof rack, safari skinny tires, and more country stickers than a world map, for anyone to...

Safety recall on certain 2013 and 2014 model year RAM Trucks.

That'll be my first concern. Depending on the level of heat treatment done at the factory, an improper weld can either weaken the treatment, or create stress by too high of a heating and cooling rate.

I like the new SD. Yeah, I heard they added a boxed frame this year :D I'll stop before this thread totally derails.

Since we like pretty pictures, see if frame flex was needed to achieve this:

You need to understand the difference between bending and torsion... Torsion is good IF it's controlled (try to read my previous posts before blindly argue). Bending is bad. The current F350 is relatively poor in bending (by 25%) compared to GM.

Personal experience without knowledge = personal opinion, which you seem to have lots. A bear knows to hibernate when it's cold - he's got experience. I know more about the science behind it than he ever would. Work on your reading comprehension - I've lost count how many times I've told you...

Weaker may have been too broad. Weaker in pure bending is proven in numbers. Now, perhaps it's stronger in impact resistance? That I'll have to look deeper into. To be fair though, if it's ground impact (and it sounds like it, even bottoming out barely puts stress on a torsion bar mount), I...

Seems as if old Fords have frame bending and bed twisting issues with the use of campers and articulation. Those are C-channel frames with your cool benefits you're throwing out there. See how that works?

No, I am not making A point, I'm making well balanced pointS. I never said boxed is always better, but I provide proof where it is. Throwing numbers out there is much better than blank statements: I've seen, I've heard, I've worked at and saw, I've witnessed... Because I can turn every single...

It very well could've been overload, especially Okanagan campers with rear biases COG. This, plus a long tongue, creates a negative moment. My point wasn't to defend the owner of the truck, I was simply showing an application where a frame's resistance to bending moments is very important. This...

And guess what's common between that bent GM and bent Ford? Open C-channel frames with low RBM! I can also find old Dodges doing the same thing. But I have not seen a modern fully boxed 50+ ksi frame do that, yet...

First of all, the 404 was built in an era where nearly all frames were C-channel. Second, the Unimog was, and is, designed to be an implement platform. And I've said a million times now, when it comes to up-fiting, a C-channel is necessary. No, I do not agree with what you're saying, because...

BTW, here's an example where frame bending strength is important (versus concentrated stress): To my knowledge this has never happened to a late model Dodge or GM, though I'd love to see an example if it has. It did happen to many older GMs and Dodges, as well as numerous Toyotas. Not...

Interesting cases for sure. Seems like GM has quality control issues (which I'm not surprised). A cracked spring/torsion bar mount is usually not shock load, as a spring by nature cannot produce shock loads, they're very gentle, but repetitive, which seems like fatigue. A shock absorber...

Are we not talking about light trucks in this thread? I made it clear from the beginning the benefits of C-channel in HD trucks, as well as the metallurgy it takes to make it happen. You'll have to give a source before I believe a Humvee frame is flexible. From everything I've seen, photos...
