Ram Chassis Cab vs 3500 Pickup for next vehicle? Input needed! For flatbed truck camper.

Maybe best to just read GVWR and payload numbers right from Ram's spec sheets. 3500 chassis cab: https://www.ramtrucks.com/BodyBuilder/service/Image?imageId=MtQrP%2FFqLY5r%2Fest8MtGjGgHzAHGUTU0WB3rWuqSY7YmQ2vEhuBWBM9XCogFXoTm%0A 3500 pickups...

Ram Chassis Cab vs 3500 Pickup for next vehicle? Input needed! For flatbed truck camper.

These are all great points to consider that I agree with except the GVWR comment is not correct. Diesel Ram 3500 pickups get higher GVWR than equivalent gas trucks. They actually end up with close to the same payload. I would also point out that diesels will do better at high altitudes...

    Go Fast Camper Megathread

We've got a GFC on a Ram 2500 and it's been the best setup for us thus far after trying a regular topper, a Northstar popup and a hardsided Scout. I especially like being able to quickly convert from camping mode to truck duties without the hassle of loading/unloading a slide-in. We built...

Ram Chassis Cab vs 3500 Pickup for next vehicle? Input needed! For flatbed truck camper.

Chassis cab will be harder to insure if you're not commercial. The straight c-channel frame on the chassis cab makes it easier to mount a flatbed but it's not nearly as stiff as the boxed frame on the pickup. The c-channel frame rails are narrower so you can't put a spare in the normal...

Thoughts on 2023 Ford Super Duty for Family Travel?

How about a Ram megacab? The seat backs fold down and make a giant flat floor. If your kids are less than 5'6" or so it would give them a ton of room and be truly flat unlike the reclined front seats

    Ram 2500 long term reliability

We have a 2016 Ram 2500 with the Cummins and have put 85000 hard miles on it. It's carried a slide in camper of some sort most of its life. Has been extremely reliable for us, just oil changes, fuel filters, and tires. Never any emissions systems issues, but you do have to work the diesels...

    2500/3500 Ram/Chevy/Ford??

Maybe on a tradesman reg cab? Still, it's hard to imagine getting 31xx pound payload on a modern ram 2500 with the Cummins and the 10k gvwr. We have a Cummins ram 2500 and its payload is only 2200 pounds and that's on a crew cab shortbed relatively modest bighorn trim.

What direction did you head when you outgrew your 4runner?

We have a diesel ram 2500 with a go fast camper and a 5th gen 4runner. Also 2 kids and dogs. The 4runner is great as a rugged daily driver but the diesel is king for long trips. If you need to go bigger than the 4runner and know that towing is important, I'd skip the 1/2 ton and go straight...

need advise for full size truck choice

I assume towing you'd be towing the travel trailer and backhoe to the land where you're building and then probably not moving them again right? I'd get those trips done with the duramax, then sell it and buy a utility trailer to pull with the xterra. Save the 40k you'd spend on a new to you...

Diesel Upgrade Cost - 1/2 ton vs 3/4 ton

You're paying for 2.3x as much diesel engine when you bump up in the HD case vs the LD case, plus that Allison name on the transmission, and the PTO if you opt for it. I don't know GM products as well, but on Fords you get a bigger rear axle when you switch from gas to diesel in the HD lineup...

    Full size wheelbase

Check out the ram 2500 platform. The crew cab 6' 4" bed is a great sweet spot with a 149" wheelbase and better turn radius than competitors. Basically the same exterior dimensions as the Ford supercab but way more interior space in the cab.

    Tailgate on or off?

You'll be fine either way, I've run with and without a tailgate on our Ram 6' 4" bed and Scout Kenai. The camper is stiff enough to be cantilevered out of the bed without a tailgate so I don't think it transfers all that much load to the tailgate unless you really screw up some angles when...

2016 Ram 2500 Cummins Manual Trans

For sale is a 2016 Ram 2500 SLT Big Horn 4wd with 83k miles. The truck has the Cummins 6.7 diesel, the G56 manual transmission, and 285/75/R18 Cooper AT3 XLT tires (34.8" diameter). I am the original owner and have all the service records. No accidents and I have a clean title in hand. I'm...

    Scout Olympic vs Kenai

I know Rams and new Tundras come with 120V power outlets in the bed. I'm sure Ford and the others have similar offerings. You could run a simple extension cord from that through the driverside port in the Scout and connect to the Goal Zero for charging while on the road and just remove the...

Ford Tremor - Colorado overland/off-road, or Rivian?

Here's a pretty impressive high altitude pull with the 7.3: This guy grosses 32k going from Ft Collins to Laramie and that's just with 3.73 gears. The 3.5 Ecoboost surely is great for short passing maneuvers but I'd take the naturally aspirated 7.3 all day long for sustained loads like towing.

Looking for opinions on AEV Prospector XL

Might want to double check that. Apart from the power wagon, I don't think any HD Rams come with lockers from the factory. You can option a limited slip in the rear from the factory on 2500's and I think it comes by default on the 3500's. Obviously you could throw in ARB air lockers yourself...

    Trail Pig 2018 PW Build

How does the hellwig sway bar do with the front disconnected? I can imagine the onroad handling has improved, but what about offroad with the front having lots of articulation but the back having even less than stock?
