Did you consider a new Tundra/Sequoia or F150 powerboost with the hybrid drivetrain? Can be had with a factory rear locker and inverter for the battery pack. Sounds to me like you want the range, torque and turbos that come with a diesel but unless you need diesel fuel specifically...
Any reason you're not considering the 7.3 gas tremor? Looks like a great drivetrain with 4.30's and the 10 speed. There are also reports of a Ram 2500 rebel coming in 2023 that has the power wagon front grill but a cummins engine and might be a better comparison with a diesel tremor.
The Ram...
100lbs for 2 bikes seems pretty heavy unless you're rocking e-bikes? 16.5 gallons between water and beer is a lot of heavy liquid. Whiskey is lighter :-).
Maybe consider a ground tent instead of the ovrlnd camper? A 2 person tent can easily be <5 lbs. I think a GFC would save you about...
How much payload do you actually need? That's a lot of money to throw away just at taxes. You've got a brand new TRX that is a dream truck for a lot of folks, are you sure you can't make it work? Take a few less creature comforts, spend a night in a hotel here and there, titanium pots instead...
Not sure I'd make that switch. The interior on a 2018 will be a step backward from your 2022. Smaller cab and older generation infotainment. You'll also lose the great LED headlights on the 2019+ trucks.
Payload on a diesel 2500 is about 2200lbs and more like 4000lbs on a 3500, but not sure...
That position would make access to the tire pretty convenient, but might block access to the 115V plug or bed light switch if you have those. Not sure if it would hit the sloping walls of the RSI cap? If you don't need full length drawers you could just put the tire flat on the floor and build...
Long distance on a highway without a big towing load says IFS half ton to me. 2.7 Ecoboost F150, GM Duramax, Ram Ecodiesel, or potentially a new Tundra hybrid. Pick your favorite brand.
Also, why sweat gas mileage too much when the difference is maybe $1k/year in fuel cost on a 60k new truck...
Are you sure the Tacoma you already have won't do you what you need? I think the tow rating on those is a little over 6000 lbs and people run FWC's on those all the time.
I guess if you've got a tax write-off situation then it's different but given the distorted vehicle market I'd take a hard...
Same on our Kenai, lithium ion batteries can't be charged when it's below freezing but they can output power down to like -5F. It actually made sense for us to run a battery warmer off the yeti to warm itself up so it start recharging.
I think the primary issue is payload. Diesels and the associated emissions are much heavier than gas engines. A normally equipped gas half ton might have 1500 pounds of payload which doesn't give much buffer for a heavier diesel powertrain plus typical camping gear and people. A gasser 3/4...
We have both a diesel Ram 2500 and a 4runner and spend a lot of time in a small western CO mountain town that sounds very similar to yours. On our dirt road and local trailheads, I see the same three types of vehicles over and over: Ram HD trucks, 4runners, and Subaru Forresters.
If you're...
Good point, a direct frame mount may not be a good idea with the open c channel design on a chassis cab. Lots more flex on those as compared to a fully boxed pickup truck frame.
You can find horror stories on both brand-specific forums but in my experience, Ram's emissions and DEF system isn't any worse than Ford's. The latest generation diesels from about 2019/2020 onward in all the brands will use more DEF than previously.
Ford still uses the cp4 injector pump...
Make sure you can get insurance if you go with a chassis cab, a lot of providers may require a commercial policy. 4500# is well within the payload of a gasser dually 3500 pickup, are you sure you need something bigger?
On 4th gen Rams you can only get the high output motor and Aisin transmission in a 3500, whereas on the 2500 you're limited to the 68RFE or G56 (went away in 2019 though). The AIsin/HO comes with a beefier transfer case and a larger ring gear in the rear axle. Ram 2500's went to coils in 2014...
