Fun question: What other 4x4 would you replace your current Toyota with and why?

One of the many joys of living in the high country is no emissions inspections, so just have to adhere to the 25 year rule, which is based on date of manufacture. So 1990s manufactured in late 89 will be eligible soon. I guess an 89 would be importable now. Hmmm.

Fun question: What other 4x4 would you replace your current Toyota with and why?

1990 Doublecab Hilux 3L diesel 4x4. Soon eligible for import to US. Why? Diesel, solid axle, simple, cheap, and room for four.

    ARB rack for FZJ80, FJ80, FJ60, FJ62 in Colorado

Bump for price drop $675. Will consider delivery in/near Colorado. I needed a larger rack. I went with a Frontrunner. The quality of the ARB is far superior - especially the mounting brackets.

Cruiser Resto & Parts Outfit In Salida CO?

Jim - welcome to the neighborhood! Yes, they do have a big boneyard. All kinds of 40s, 55s, 60s, a few 80s and some pickups. They definitely need to up their web game - that website looks like it is from 1995.

Taking parents west to Moab and Ouray...suggestions needed

I would still recommend going over 550 from Durango-Silverton-Ouray on your way to Moab (or the opposite). It is spectacular and even more so covered in snow. It won't matter that you can't do any offroading there. From Durango take US160 east back to Walsenburg and then Clayton NM and then to...

    Reliability of first gen Forester

I believe some first generation Foresters had the DOHC motor. Fine motor, but a bit more difficult to work on (setting valve clearance) than later SOHC motor. I've had multiple 2.5 Subarus in the family. All have needed headgaskets. Can be done in car, but actually easier to pull the motor. My...

    Choosing my first overland vehicle

100 series Cruiser and a set of good all-terrains and call it a day. When/if you sell a few years down the road it will likely depreciate less than any of the other choices.

Recalled to life: my 80 (re)build thread

Gordon and Maverick - thanks for the comments. I've had the hi-lift mounted on the swing out. Last time I tried to use it a pin was frozen. Same thing the time before that. I'm thinking that moving it inside - at least the ratcheting part - might keep it in better shape. But I'm still...

    Cold Weather Shelter

I have a Propex in my Vanagon. Multiple zero degree (F) nights (-17C) every winter. Works great but a little loud. ($600-$800). Got mine from Karl at http://www.westyventures.com/propex.html . Wood stove in a Springbar sounds great though.

Recalled to life: my 80 (re)build thread

Made some progress this week. Phase one complete The amount of space underneath is cavernous! I was planning on mounting my freshwater tank where the spare was, but now I'm thinking I'll put it right behind the rear seat. I used 1/2 ply for the top, coated with two coats of oil-based poly...
