You need to upgrade more than the brake pads. At the very least ,upgrade the pads and rotors. A simple Internet search will reveal all sorts of upgrades.
This is a nice compact boo-boo kit with bag. I also have a tourniquet, EMT shears, small roll of 100mph tape and a field dressing.
It is easy to get carried away with building a kit with too much stuff.

The brakes are side specific . Left and right. the wires going to the front shows the brakes are installed on the wrong side.
There are two easy ways to determine if your brakes were installed on the wrong side.
The electric wires should be exiting the assembly to the rear.
There is no emergency Ham frequency. The emergencies you reference would be broadcast on AM and FM radio. A CB or GMRS transceiver will receive just as well as a transistor radio.
These are all radio receivers. Since you don't want to listen to chatter why get one? Receiving is not going to help you in an emergency.
Why not get a GMRS or CB ,with tuned antenna, with weather band capabilities and you can get the weather ,if available, and can talk if need be.
