Lightweight Homebuilt Camper for my Tacoma

Looking back as some of my FWC pictures, yeah it looks outside on both:

POD: Homebuilt foam core fiberglass skin pop-up camper build thread

Yeah I'm settled on that part for sure, no brainer when I think about it. Just trying to figure out door jamb design now, I think the sketch I posted would likely be the easiest and work but the floor is open for suggestions over the next few days.

Lightweight Homebuilt Camper for my Tacoma

I'm having a harder time remembering the top as well, maybe it is on the inside edge but I don't think so. The bottom though I KNOW was on the outside edge so the roof definitely rests on some of the soft side material. These is a bit of soft foam over the members that contact the soft sides...

POD: Homebuilt foam core fiberglass skin pop-up camper build thread

Gotta do something to get access for the times you just want to toss some gear in and also even if you could actuate the top from the outside there are maintenance instances you'd want to be able to get in. I originally was thinking a split door but that just seemed a big pain in the butt. A...

POD: Homebuilt foam core fiberglass skin pop-up camper build thread

One funny thing I've noticed is dust naturally accumulating on the painted areas with wood blocking underneath, you can see it in the above photo (look at the white lines around the window, etc.). It dusts right off as its just loosely sitting there but for whatever reason its getting drawn...

Lightweight Homebuilt Camper for my Tacoma

Are you putting the canvas on the inside edge of the roof member (ie the vertical part of the angle tucks into that gap between the roof skin and member and the horizontal piece sandwiches the fabric between itself and the bottom of the member)? If I recall correctly its typically on the...

A little fine tuning and the flip up walls are ready to be glassed. Bought a roll of plastic piano hinge to try out on these as an extra weather/wind stopper after the weather seal I'll put on the bottom edge of the wall. Door up next.

Keep it rolling. Folks watch and comment occasionally. It keeps folks involved for brainstorming/daydreaming. Makes a great reference thread in the future. All great things. Personally I was thinking it coming along quickly/nicely verse my meandering pace. :p

    Thoughts on locks/deadbolts?

In my case when the top is don't there really isn't a great way in unless they break through two overlapping windows. Though a reciprocating saw would get you inside if really determined. Someone could lock me in then, eek! OH or others with marine experience are perko locks worth a darn...

    Thoughts on locks/deadbolts?

I grant anyone can get into anything. However its slightly different that tons of similar keys (or potentially master keys) are walking around with folks that have a camper. Normally its a non-issue but if ever visiting national parks, etc. if could factor in. Again most folks are good but...

    Thoughts on locks/deadbolts?

Yeah good point for the main door lock (if desired) just slide latch the dang thing since either way you're reaching in to actuate something. I'd have to tweak the trim around the door slightly for it but not a big deal. I was focused on a deadbolt thinking I'd get outside access but the...

    Thoughts on locks/deadbolts?

So this factors into my build but I'm curious thoughts on locks/deadbolts for campers. For my build I have some of the typical camper handles with integral deadbolts. However these locks are pretty dang generic and for instance the same key sets I got with my new locks would open the locks on...

The TARDIS - A Four Wheel Camper Build

FYI, Glidden Oil Floor and Porch is a pretty good coating/well wearing paint that I recoated my old FWC with.

New Four Wheel UTE Flat Bed Model Coming Soon ...

Cool. That cabover is still off to me but as long as you'll offer folks one that is full depth I think that is a great setup. I take it you decided to through bolt the floor then? I was looking at mine over the weekend, I think my first attempt will be brackets off my jack brackets to the bed...

New Four Wheel UTE Flat Bed Model Coming Soon ...

For long term base camping I will carry my jacks and plywood crosses for my rig but that won't be my norm and takes some effort verse other options thus my caution. The niche for these are not self supporting freestanding campers (which come with added weight).

That drawer is paired with a less deep rear cross member compared to what I have, FYI. A solution to store jacks is feasible but just keep in mind you have to support the camper as previously noted so factor that into your plan.

New Four Wheel UTE Flat Bed Model Coming Soon ...

You can do anything ya want. Personally hauling around 100-150lb of bulky jacks isn't something I'd do for my regular setup. These are nice self contained wandering units. If you like the basecamp thing then unless the terrain you're crossing doesn't accommodate it I'd think a pop-up trailer...
