    Camper box weight

There are weigh bridges scattered around the country, many of which you are obliged to enter if you are a "Truck" which is defined as every vehicle that is registered with a GVM of 4.5T or more. If you are overweight you can not drive away until you are back to a legal weight. They may also...

    expedition VW beetle

Early bugs had a reputation for "falling over" in Oz, so we chose a '63 Mini 850 and drove it from Adelaide to Darwin (3,000km) and back for our honeymoon in 1967. It had a DIY roof top tent. The rear seat was removed to provide more space. We did see a "bug" on the way north. We then...

Bugga. Sorry. That was a response to uncontrollable spam from various O/S sources (not Yanks in particular) if I recall. Thought you might be able to read. You will not be able to register. :( The OP will be able to access it though, so might get some value. Cheers, Peter OKA196 motorhome

    Camper box weight

I am currently building a new OKA motorhome similar to the one in my avatar. It will be registered under 4.5T. I am in Adelaide. The 23mm sandwich panel that I am using weighs 6kg/m2 (the floor is 6.9kg/m2). Panel was purchased from Vanglass in Yandina Queensland. https://www.vanglassrv.com.au/...

    My Fuso4x4

How much departure angle do you really need at that height? Cheers, Peter OKA196 motorhome

    My Fuso4x4

I reckon your rear cut-away is a complication that provides no value. I would get rid of it and lower the spare(s) to the red line. Cheers, Peter OKA196 motorhome

    My Fuso4x4

My solution was to shorten the habitation sufficiently to put the spares on the rear within the 60% allowed, move the North-South bed to over the cab with a "pop-top" (just over the bed) and have the seating at the rear with a huge picture window. I find many layouts to be claustrophobic...

Has Anyone Mounted A Flex Solar Panel to Rooftop Cargo Box?

I have found this company's advise reliable. https://www.solar4rvs.com.au/buying/buyer-guides/flexible-solar-panel-mounting-instruction-guide/ Cheers, Peter OKA196 motorhome

Probably newbish DRW vs. Super Single questions

We are typically 2.8T on the front and 3.6T at the rear when fully loaded. I use the chart posted earlier religiously (which came from Michelin data for this tyre). This tyre is popular with tour operators in Oz. 100,000km is the typical life of a set. Michelin would not approve it for OEM...

Probably newbish DRW vs. Super Single questions

3075 KILOGRAMS. 80 mph is faster than I ever want to go in my 6.5T truck. Not sure about the availability. The last I purchased was 2 years ago. I prefer the Michelin, but there is an equivalent Bridgestone. Cheers, Peter OKA196 motorhome

Probably newbish DRW vs. Super Single questions

Because of their single steel only sidewall ply, which is thin and flexible, the Michelins stay cooler than many tyres when aired down, so are less likely to be heat damaged. Cheers, Peter OKA196 motorhome

Probably newbish DRW vs. Super Single questions

Absolutely not true. I have been running 305R7019.5 Michelin XDE2 tyres on our rig for 20 years. Michelin publish extensive data for airing down these tyres. This chart is based directly on that data, as are the pics. We would run on the yellow all the way across the Simpson, for example and for...

Probably newbish DRW vs. Super Single questions

All 4WD vehicles that are designed as "serious" 4WDs from the ground up are super singles as designed and built. They don't generally have DRW versions of the same vehicles. That applies whether it be a Haflinger or a Unimog. The chassis width of a vehicle designed as a super single vehicle will...

What inspired you to indulge in expedition travel?

We always traveled and camped in the bush in Oz, but it is clear that major expeditions into remote areas was inspired by this particular expedition. Cross Roads Alice Springs. https://www.bpvideolibrary.com/record/754 This is a 30 minute video of a figure eight trip across Australia in a Mini...

    2nd Battery placement...

See my avatar? The crank battery is behind the cab, under the floor. I changed from flooded lead acid to AGM because the former do not survive corrugations. Recently changed to a LiFePO4 crank and reduced the weight from 36kg to 4.5kg. Cheers, Peter OKA196 motorhome

    Total Composites and Ventilation

Think toilet "S" bend. :) It might be useful to note that the actual airflow through this system is quite low while driving. It is limited to the ram-air-pressure pushing through what should be quite small leaks in the rest of the habitat. If the leaks are large, the airflow will be...

    Total Composites and Ventilation

Not sure what you mean. It is always open but it has a water trap and double wall and the entry to the inside is higher than the outside grill. Oz has a lot of stuff we call "bull dust" that some roads develop. It is the consistency of talcum powder and it flows like water. It can be half a...

    Total Composites and Ventilation

That is a forward facing vent. The air has a torturous path to the interior which allows it to stay open hail, rain or shine, while stationary or while driving. It serves 2 purposes: 1. Ventilation if all the windows and doors are closed (a legal requirement in Oz if there are any LPG...

    Cabover vs. Long-Nose Platform

Visibility. The differences are very significant both from a driving perspective (especially as you crest each dune in the desert) and from what you see of the surrounding country due to the seating height above the ground. Cheers, Peter OKA196 motorhome
