Any input on 255/85s and stock gears?

I ended up buying a set of 265/75/16 Maxxis Bighorns. This size is a good compromise based on my intended use, it maintains the street manners and should give me better traction and a little more clearance offroad. So far I've only put about 40 miles on the Bighorns but I'm very happy with...

    Please design me a system

Darton, Tucson T4R's suggestion about upgrading to a CPAP machine that can run on 12v is a really good one. Inverters don't have a great efficiency and you'll loose a good amount of the available power to heat. If you can run off of 12v a nice option would be to get a portable battery jumper...

    Capturing the night images

tdesanto, I'm really glad you could provide some Nikon specific instructions. While writing my initial post I kept thinking that I was throwing a lot of concepts out there and not giving any concrete instructions into how to actually make those changes on the camera. My excuse is that I'm a...

    Capturing the night images

Wil, The trick with these kinds of shots is making sure the exposure is exactly the same for each photo, this means using manual mode with a fixed aperture (f stop), shutter speed, ISO, focus, and white balance. If you want to be really precise I'd recommend the following. This assumes the...

    Socket Storage Solution

Yeah, I bought a couple sets when they were on sale and installed all the nubs onto one set of rails. :) I've got one for all my 1/2" drive, one 3/8" drive, and one for 1/4" drive. The only sockets I don't have on the rails are the 1/2" deep ones that are too big to fit. - Matt

    Socket Storage Solution

I've been using these plastic rails for a couple of years and have been really happy with them. The sockets stay in place even on rough washboard roads. I have a toolbag that is the same length so I can throw the rails in there with a couple of wrench rolls and I'm good to go. - Matt

Air mattress vs. foam sleeping pad

For Christmas I received an Exped Downmat 9 DLX which is a 3.5" thick down filled air mattress. Down looses it's insulating efficiency when wet so the storage bad is used to pump up the mattress rather than exhaling into it which would introduce water vapor, it's an interesting setup. The...

Any input on 255/85s and stock gears?

Thank you for all the input. Gearing in 4LO is a big concern of mine, I was planing to install a double transfer case at some point to lower the final crawl ratio. Haven't had a chance to try out the 285s yet, but will post the results when I do. - Matt

Any input on 255/85s and stock gears?

Redline, Thank you for the reply. I am in SF, but usually use my daily driver around town so the gearing of the truck is not a major issue there. In terms of tolerance for overall gearing, I've driven my ZJ with stock 3.73 gears for 5-6 years with true 33" tires on it, stock tires were about...

Any input on 255/85s and stock gears?

Recently I purchased a 2000 4runner Sport with a 5speed, 4.10 gears, and 265/70 tires. This truck will be replacing a moderately built 96 ZJ and used mainly on trails in the Sierras. I plan to install a 2-3" in (SS 1.2) lift in the next month or two and am now stuck deciding on what size tire...
