    ExploringNH's 2002 4Runner build-up thread

I need a place to consolidate all of the info and plans on the 4Runner, and this seems like the logical place. Everyone knows what a stock 4Runner looks like, so Ill skip that step. First up was the lift, rack, and 285/75/16 (33") Pro Comp AT tires. Bumpers came next: Recently I...

    school me on relays

Relays can have more than 4 prongs and still be useful for what you need. The relay you picked up sounds like it is for a certain make and model car, but most use the same setup. Does it look like these will fit on the prongs of the relay...

    school me on relays

Having large gauge wire and current running to a switch not rated for the load is a good way to start a fire. Glad you are changing that out. Im not entirely clear on what you want to do with the CB, but this would be a circuit for the fridge. I would just run a small gauge power wire from the...

    Stage 1 complete

A Hummer might be a bit big to fit in the wheel wheel. I second the choice of 255. A bit of working with a hammer and you will be all set. I dont know how the tacomas are set up, but my 4runner had a plastic fender liner covering the pinch weld. I used a heat gun to form it back a...

Looking good! That extra height will certainly help out on the trails. How does the ride compare to stock?

    Sand Ladders???

If it were me, I would probably try to figure out a way to drill or slot those to reduce weight and increase traction. They look sturdy enough to be able to lose some meat and still hold up the truck. I dont think traction paint will last too long with a bit of tire spin.

    Trans New Hampshire Expedition 2008

What do you use to pump oil into your differential...

Also what I use. I have mine sitting in a bucket dolly (although not as nice as the one pictured): Makes filling everything up quick and relatively clean. Just grab the hose and drag the bucket around by it. I used to just use the 1qt containers and a handpump, but it took too long and in the...

    Trans New Hampshire Expedition 2008

Not posted yet. The route we took varied significantly from the planned route. We have (or had) GPS tracks of the whole route, but they may have been lost on the last day of the trip. We are working on recovering those. If that doesnt work, its off to Google Maps to hand plot the whole route as...

CB problems - Low volume on transmit

I have had a problem with my CB since Ive owned it. I have a Cobra 75wxt or whatever the model is that has all of the controls in the handset and a small box to mount remotely. I have a Firestik 4' antenna and some generic cabling. The small box has a metal case and is not grounded. It is...

    Trans New Hampshire Expedition 2008

This night would be primitive camping in tents and in trucks for those of us with sleeping platforms. With temperatures again bordering single digits, I was glad to be sleeping in our truck where the heat was just an arms length away if needed. Thankfully, it wasn’t needed until about 5am, and...

    Trans New Hampshire Expedition 2008

Its 9pm and our speed is reduced to a crawl as the enveloping fog reduces visibility to mere feet. I cant tell if headlights on or headlights off is better. The corn rows on both sides of the road are the only indicators that we are still on track. At this point, we are about an hour late to the...

    Different Approach...

Out of those cars, the M5 will be a much more comfortable ride. The stiff suspension and rigid seats in the Lotus will wear you out much faster. Either way, it would be a fun trip and the open air ability of the Lotus may outweigh the comfort and fatigue factor. In NH, one of the common things...

should I install just the front?

I wouldnt touch anything this close to the trip. What happens if you break a bolt on the strut top or somewhere else? I would just wait until afterwards, especially since you dont even have the full setup. The airbags might raise the truck a bit, but you wont get any more travel out of the setup...

To drive in the winter, or not?

If you park it for a season, it will end up 100x rustier than if you drove it all winter and never washed it. Just drive it, wash it occasionally, and use some type of wax or oil based undercoating if you really want to go the distance.

dual rears a problem at low psi

I recently had to operate a loaded dump truck on some rough trails and had some thoughts about the DRWs. What I found while off road was that in rocky areas, I would often have one of the dual rear tires off the ground while the other was on a rock, leaving that one tire to support the weight...

How extensively do you need to modify a 2000 4runner to accept an arb front bumper?

Shrockworks makes very quality products and their 4Runner bumper is no exception from what I have seen of it. The other ARB you can look at is for the Prado, but I think that one takes some mods to make fit as well.
