I've got 285/75/16" tires on my TJ (essentially 33"x11.5" tires) with a Dana 44 rear axle. My trailer has 205/75/15" tires on 15x5" rims. Even with these smaller trailer tires (compared to the Jeep TJ's tires), my trailer has a full three inches more clearance under the trailer axle vs. under...
You really need a spare that matches your trailer's tires; preferably a dedicated spare for both your trailer and tow vehicle (that's two spare tires; one for each).
Think about it; you've spent a couple thousand at least for your trailer and all the gear that goes with it/attached to it. You...
I built a little trailer on a Harbor Freight type 4' trailer frame, and I love it. I lengthened the tongue 10" when I put the tray up front. The tub is 40" wide by 50" long. If I were to do it all over again, I'd build it on a modified HF 4x8' non-folding frame modified for a tub 40" wide by...
How about mounting a swing away rear bumper and spare tire carrier on the back of your trailer? That way you could carry a spare on your trailer and on your Jeep.
Or... a 285/70/17" tire is essentially a 33" tall tire. How about a narrow 33" tire? I think BFG makes a 33" by 9.5" wide tire...
Been adding a few things to my little trailer. I swapped out the two Kolpin 1.5 gallon fuel cells for two 2.5 gallon jerry cans. I got a set of quick-fists and mounted a shovel on the rear and put the axe up front. And I put a Cam Can water jug on the spare tire carrier. The Cam Can sticks...
Thanks for the complements. My opinion(s):
I think having trailer brakes standard would be an unnecessary need and expense for a small lightweight trailer. Having them as an option might be better, but usually trailer axles with the option for trailer brakes are in the much higher rated...
I think there's a market for folks that want to pull a little lightweight trailer behind their Jeeps. Here's my aluminum Army theme's trailer. It's essentially one big aluminum truck tool box on a modified 4' Harbor Freight type trailer frame. The box is 40" x 50" at the base. And enough...
This might give you some ideas. It's build off a 4' Harbor Freight type trailer (and obviously very much modified).

I've been happy with my lunette ring and pintle hitch set-up. A lot of the noise I originally had was the lunette ring banging around in the tongue receiver (pivoting ever so slightly on the hitch pin). A nut welded to a hole on the underside of the receiver tube (forward of the hitch pin)...
A pintle hitch and lunette ring will give you all the up-and-down movement you want, and more side-to-side "twisting" than a ball and coupler system.
Do you have a 2" receiver on your truck and on the front of your trailer?
How about a telescoping tongue? One made with 2" outside square tubing (receiver tubing) that slides through a larger outside "diameter" tube that forms the backbone of your trailer? You could set it up so you could adjust the length from all the way flush with the tray on the front of your...
If it's for a lightweight trailer, could you use channel instead of square tubing? Then it would be easy to drill through the top of the channel and put a nut underneath.
Harbor Freight type trailers are made of C-channel (about 1/8" thick) and are fairly strong; if you found some 3/16"...
Thanks for the compliments! This little trailer has been an ongoing project for a number of years, and I've had fun building it. I tried to make it so others could replicate it without the need of a welder, and with easily obtainable parts. The aluminum box kinda pushed it over the limit, but...
Thanks. Today I got the bungee cords for the cooler, and then went and got it weighed. When weighed it included a heavy rubber mat on the floor of the trailer tub, the empty gas cans and cooler, and of course the angle iron used to lengthen the tongue and the 24" length of 2" receiver tube on...
So one of the last things I needed to do for the trailer was put some brackets on the cooler tray to keep the cooler from sliding around, and adding some eyebolts for bungee cord (or ratchet strap) attachment points. I had to use some large fender-washers for the bracket bolts as the flooring...
You need some sort of tray up front. I made mine from a 2" receiver hitch cargo hauler tray and just used the tray itself. But you can easily fab something together with some 2" angle iron 1/8 - 3/16" thick and some expanded metal for the flooring.
Start here to see how I made my cooler tray...
