Portable fridge, open truck bed and vibrations

IMO: Yes, you're overthinking it. I've got my Engel 45 strapped firmly to the rear floor of my 4Runner; It's sitting on the interior carpet( which has almost zero cushioning ability) and I have no worries about vibration/washboard roads, etc. Just make sure you firmly tie it down so it's 'one...

Water Jugs?? What do you use?

Scepter cans here; tougher than the Reliance units in case of emergency. You can add a spigot to the screw top, or, order a spare screw top and add the spigot to that.

How to repair small screw holes in Pelican cases?

Geez, guys: Epoxy, hot glue, roofing goo? Really? Rigid adhesives for an inherently flexible material that is notoriously slippery? Think! Please seal the small holes in your Pelican with RTV(Silicone rubber sealant). Not "contains silicone" bathtub/sink caulk. I personally recommend the...

How can I get some tie-down points in the back of my 2011 T4R?

Large-ish carabiners or the hooks on ratchet straps will attach to the front seat---and the rear seat---floor brackets.

iPhone vs dedicated hand held unit

I've got a Montana, which I use in car/on dash and handheld hiking. I also have an iPhone with Gaia and a whole bunch of maps on it. I'd love to have a tablet with live tracking map display for car only....maybe someday when I feel rich. The downside of the phone: 1. Battery life: If used...

Aww, man...there isn't even anyone driving it!

    what tools do you take/use?

It helps if you can define what repair/adjustment jobs you'd like to able to perform while out on the trail. The absolute minimum for me is 1. Change belts and hoses, 2. Change a wheel, 3. Tighten any fastener that might come loose Add Nitrile gloves, zip ties, and your favorite odd tools. This...

    Death Valley Racetrack Trip

If you have access, you can search the L.A. times archives for a story about a pilot who flew multiple drug runs into the Racetrack. Maybe early 1990's...I forgot when it happened. He had helpers on the ground who cleared many of the rocks off the playa so he could have a safer landing...

    aux battery pros and cons...

I ran two group 34 Die Hard Platinum batteries in my '91 Toyota 4cyl truck that had a tiny 60A alternator and it was easily able to work with both batteries through the National Luna system. The Group 34 Die Hard Platinum has run the Engel 45(set to fridge, not freeze) for three days, no sweat.

    Seat re-foam

That's a really good price; here in the L.A. area, admittedly on the higher-priced side of town, it cost about $100 to have the bottom foam replaced in 2006, over $200 recently. Stiffer foam is better, imo.

Alternative to a High Lift jack?

I've been carrying a Sears aluminum "3 ton" floor jack. 43 pounds so you can pick it up and carry it with one hand. Unfortunately, it doesn't pack well in the small 4Runner due to it's irregular shape, and tendency to start leaking if it's packed in any orientation except right side up. I...

    aux battery pros and cons...

I like John at EE, and have bought several things from him, and I like that super-jumpstart thingy, but his write up on it implies that you can drain your vehicle's battery flat with abandon and it won't matter 'cause you have this super-jumpstart thingy. Of course, WE all know that that would...

    aux battery pros and cons...

Dual battery systems no longer need to be complex--IF you are willing put your faith in modern electronics and microprocessors. The simplest is to connect a second battery in parallel with the main battery. Of course, if you stay camped out long enough without running the motor to charge, you...

    what about rei

One advantage of buying from REI is that everything they sell is 'satisfaction guaranteed' forever. Also, if you are a member, you get 10% of what you spend returned to you at the end of the year. Of course, most things they sell are at list price, which is the normal case in their industry...

    Fire Extinguishers

I keep a mini 2.5 pound wet chemical(Halotron, apparently an inferior relative of the great Halon)behind the pass seat(mini truck); When out on remote travel, I carry that plus a cheap 5 pound dry chemical plus an expensive($200) 5 pound wet chemical; Extra water(wouldn't it be "di-Hydrogen...

Smok'in Deal on GlobalStar Sat. Phones

I can conditionally recommend the Inmarsat Isatphone Pro; $550 or so for the phone; satellite always available(geostationary and you already know where it is); text messages billed at 1/3 the minute rate; send and receive email; Bluetooth plus conventional headset jack; slow(1/2 dialup speed)...

    Scepter MFC surplus

Caution on the Scepter cans... Just a FYI: the Scepters use different cap gaskets for Diesel vs. gasoline. If you use the Diesel gaskets with gas(as I unknowingly did once), the intended-for-Diesel gaskets will disintegrate over a period of months. I don't know if the "petrol" gaskets work...

    Scepter can racks

These Adventure Trailers units seemed to be the lightest and among the simplest on the market. Unfortunately, I abandoned the use of Scepter cans in favor of the metal NATO cans before I had a chance to try the holders with the Scepters...the bloating of the Scepters with temp/altitude could be...
