That van is perfect for a camper..............
Your van must be a 1987 the first year of the fuel injected Vortec small block, I think that is the year the angle of the heads intake changed. If the TBI 350 runs good it will out perform your old LT1 under almost all conditions, the old LT1 will...
Congrats on the red AWD passenger van, very cool.... I hear you on the easy 15hr run, road manners are what set these vans apart, windy days on the open road or twisty two lane..
.
While not the lowest profile it can handle anything you might come up with, mine will hold people standing. I cut...
Good score on the AWD Van w/ 3:73 posi and a great color, the doors on both sides must be perfect for camping. It looks like your front torsion bars may be cranked up a bit already, looks nice.
I like the that the aftermarket side windows stay in the stamped window area on your van, it seals...
We put some miles on the AWD GMC exploring seasonal roads in the Adirondacks then both the Green and White Mountain ranges...............
I have done the 4x4 dually truck camper thing and the Jeep and a tent thing for decades, this "Van down by the river" thing just works well....Kind of like...
Occasionaldirt,
Glad to hear the factory wheel swap worked out, those are some of the best looking wheels GM has made lately. They are easier to keep clean and hold up better than most aftermarket wheels when driven in road salt.. Due to some really ugly GM wheels in my recent past I gave my...
A little update on the inside progress, we have been sleeping on a nice dual layer of camping pad and finally had a custom mattress made, it’s 4” thick, 2” of firm and 2” of 5lb memory foam with a custom zipper cover . It’s a 54” wide full that has been cut down to almost 6’, this should have...
The next time I rotate the tires I will try to measure back spacing, they are a little wider than the standard 16". When GM makes a part they use the same part across as many lines and for as long as absolutely possible, for finding junk yard parts it's a great thing but as we have seen recently...
Yea, it actually does better than the V6 SUV it replaced, at least 15 MPG and almost 20 MPG sometimes. I would say the take away from my thread is how easy the 1500 AWD is to live with. I have been around many vans when younger and the driving experience did not make me long for more time behind...
Update
We loaded the GMC AWD up with 5 days worth of gear and went into the National Forrest for some solitude. The new lift springs got a work out and nothing broke or rubbed, at full load it handled everything very well and kept most of the 3" lift. I am pretty impressed with the AWD Van it...
265-75-16 with no issues, 285-75-16 rub in the front according to the web..........265-70-17 BFG A/T is what I run, same as a 265-75 -16.......
The only thing better than laying in my bed looking out the window, would be looking out your pop up panels..
The 1/2 ton Van springs are 2240lb 3 leaf springs that have the bottom leaf in use all the time, some springs use the bottom leaf only when at max load. The next spring which could be yours is rated at 2485lbs not enough, the next Van spring is rated at 3710lbs. That is to big of a jump for my...
I used 1-1/2" perforated steel tubing and the brackets that lock into them, it is easy to work with. It is NOT the cheapest stuff but the 80-20 aluminum I looked at is big money. It is overkill for some stuff but not as heavy as you would think due to all the...
I spent some time worrying about the road manners before lifting the AWD GMC due to it's excellent handling and ride. The front lift keys and stock shocks with spacers work just fine, I agree with other people that the front ride is actually better on bumpy roads, I have felt no harshness...

O.K For it's first birthday the GMC got a little boost, 3" in the back and 2 1/4" in the front empty, "Fully" loaded about 2" in the back.
I went with a new set of rear springs for a 93-99 3/4 ton suburban, #22-907 rated at 2900lbs vs 2200 stock, the spring pack provides 1 7/8" lift just due to...
Nice and tidy with a splash of color, looks good........................
I agree with your observation of the AWD Van in the snow, "it just goes where you point it" this winter has thoroughly tested it.................
.
Finding a shock that is the right length and will bolt on is pretty much solvable at this point if you use a tape measure, agreed but getting a shock with the valving tuned for a van with a lift has not been addressed by shock companies. The only thing I know about valving is if it's tuned...
Stihl cordless chainsaw
I was thinking the same thing last fall before a camping trip, I hate the sound and gas cans a chainsaw requires. I have been wanting a cordless sawzall and had a fall trip planned on the Golden Road that could require a real fire all day. In the summer, camping fires...
11 1/2" x 6 1/2" x 43 3/4" is the size of the box one chair came in and fits snuggly, out of the box the bottom is smaller diameter.
.
I am using a StrongBack for a computer chair now, nice back angle, must be cabin fever........
