Advice Needed:: Tacoma owner considering a ZR2

My second gen Tundra CrewMax TRD 4WD is almost dead stock, except for 285/18 ATs, a Grp 31 battery, spray-in bed liner, SnugTop shell and some lights. I struggle to get close to 14mpg in that truck. Toyota insisted on selling that truck with 4.30 gears, and I think they still do. My old 5.7...

Advice Needed:: Tacoma owner considering a ZR2

"But what are these "GM issues" you are talking about. I know that new platforms tend to have more problems versus older platforms. But I do think there is some brand bias being exhibited here. You both dislike GM's reliability "issues." " Brand bias??? Nope. I am not a Toyota fanboy, but I do...

    Sam's Club Pelican Look Alikes

I just bought a medium size HF box a couple weeks ago. On sale or with a coupon, it's a decent value for non-critical stuff. I wouldn't use it for mega-bucks camera gear on a rafting trip, but it's great for tools and incidentals in the back of the truck.

Advice Needed:: Tacoma owner considering a ZR2

The Taco is better. Period. Why? Because you already own it. It will take one hell of a lot of mileage improvement to cover the $13K cost of entry to the ZR2. And then there's the mods you have already done to the Taco that you would do again to the ZR2. And the GM reliability issues...

PPG100 Portable Power Station Now Available

So, it's a battery in a Pelican-like case, without a solar panel. For $1100? Holy moly!

    Odyssey vs. Diehard Platinum

The standard method is to start the charge on a dumb charger at low amps, and then switch over to the fancy pants smart charger. An alternative is to connect a good battery to the dead one, so that the smart charger thinks the dead battery is not dead. AGMs and smart chargers sometimes seem to...

    Odyssey vs. Diehard Platinum

Don't know. I have sort of given up on trying to get a decent charge on my 3-year-old 2150. I have a 270 amp alternator and three different Odyssey-branded smart chargers plus a Ctek and an Optimus charger, and for the last couple of years I have been running charge /recondition cycles at...

    Spray on bed liner

I have Linex in the Tundra and a local no-name liner in the Dodge. No perceptible difference between the two. The Dodge no-name liner has been in the truck and used hard for 12 years with no issues other than being dirty. The one is the Tundra has been there for about 4 years and looks better...

I don't have to reset my old beam-type torque wrenches.

12v Deep cycle battery chassis mount

You don't really need an enclosure, you just need to mount the battery solidly and out of the way. Here is the dual Grp 34 setup under the cab of my Dodge. Boxes came from Summit Racing, modified with some angle iron to strengthen and facilitate secure mounting. One of these has been under...

Mounting a roof rack on a camper shell

OP, easy fix if you want to slide the bars on that rack. Just run the screws down instead of up, and order a handful of Yakima track nuts. These things are large enough to distribute the load on the underside of the fiberglass shell and have threaded inserts to catch the screws, and they are...

A little love for the Hi-Lift

And here is your Hollywood minute for today: That commercial was shot in the Pasadena Arroyo Seco, under the Colorado Street Bridge, maybe 1/4 mile from where the Rose Parade starts. When it was built in 1913, it was the highest concrete bridge in the world, and is almost 1500 feet long.

    Food safe sprayer heads?

Just go to Home Depot or Lowe's and get a pressure regulator from the plumbing or irrigation department. Not labeled as such, but a stainless steel bidet sprayer is probably OK. Read the label, call the manufacturer. Another alternative is the sprayer head from a kitchen faucet with a...

On board water systems questions. Specifically check valves and venting.

If you don't want the tank vented while you are traveling, you can mount a 1/4-turn compressor drain on the top of the tank, with a small diameter tube routed to the outside. Open the valve for filling or draining, close it when driving.

    Integrated Spare Fuel Tank

You can find aux diesel tanks for many vehicles, but aux gas tanks are a thing of the past, unless you go custom. Personally, I would not want gas in the passenger compartment, unless it's a fuel cell with a kill switch and an extinguisher system. Even then, I'd be nervous with all the loonies...

    Headlight & Taillight replacement

If you are referring to the 95 Tahoe, there are glass composite headlights out there for it. Same headlights as on my 98 GMC K1500, which is now running glass headlights. OEM is crap, you have to search out aftermarket lights. I'll try to post a pic of mine tomorrow.

    Headlight & Taillight replacement

3M 90% VLT Film. Highest UV protection and highest light transmission of any film, as of about 16 months ago, probably still the best. When I put new headlights on my Power Wagon, I had them filmed to control yellowing and to protect from desert sandstorms. Not perfect, some lifting at the...
