EUREKA! I think I found a possible solution.
Camptime sells a replacement leg set for $48: https://www.camptime.com/collections/parts?page=2
I don't really want to cut down the legs of my existing 15" Roll-a-Cot because there are times that I want to have a tall cot. But what if I buy a...
Backpacking gear is small and light but you pay a comfort penalty for it unless you're young and fit. There's an intermediate zone between backpacking and bulky vehicle camping gear. Let's call it "Zone 2."
I have 3 separate sets of gear:
Zone 1: Backpacking & bike camping
Zone 2: Kayak...
I use a cotton storage bag. But a mouse once chewed a dozen holes in it. Maybe they like cotton. Thank God he didn't damage the down sleeping bag. Ideally I think a down sleeping bag should be stored in a rodent-proof plastic container.
I totally agree with Nanabijou's take on this mattress. I give these guys credit for creativity, but their basic premise---"Air mattresses suck"---is faulty and the specs for this mattress are not attractive to me for any type of camping.
Air mattresses don't suck. They're very comfortable and...
I ended up taking two tents, two cots, two mattresses and it was a drag! Way too much gear to pack and manage. I would really like to take a 3P rather than 4P tent, if I could just solve this cot problem. Reason why I need a higher cot: age; hip replacement. The Helinox Cot One is 6"; if I could...
I have version 1, which can't be converted to use the leg extensions. Bed risers were suggested here. I tried those and found them unstable. CVC pipe suggestion seemed too labor intensive for my skills.
Is there any type of foam, styrofoam, or other LIGHT, RIGID material that could be cut in a...
What you need for a shower might depend on the climate and your activities. If you've been hiking or rolling in the mud all day, for sure nothing beats a real shower. But here's my simple system:
1. If you're at a campground where you can be seen by other campers, wash at night in the dark.
2...
What temperatures do you camp in? I camp into the mid twenties (F) in the fall. At that temperature a good down sleeping bag and a hat are warm enough (for me personally). For more warmth you can use a water bottle filled with near-boiling water---that lasts quite a long time in a down sleeping...
Mice are a concern with down sleeping bags, possibly also insects. I store my down bags in their cotton sacks, hanging from a shelf in a closet. I once found a lot of tiny holes that mice had eaten in the cotton sack. Thankfully they didn't damage the bag itself but I've heard in backpacking...
Perhaps I misspoke about the weight, but I noticed that LL Bean sleeping bags gained about 4 ounces when they went to Down-Tek. Plus they went up considerably in price.
My question is whether hydrophobic treatments are necessary. I find that it's just not that hard to keep a sleeping bag dry...
I feel like the dangers of a wet down sleeping bag are exaggerated. I've been using a down bag for years and have only once gotten it wet, due to stupidly putting my tent in a depression that flooded. Also, some interesting tests on YouTube show how difficult it is to get down to absorb water...
A nice recent addition to the Synmat lineup is the Synmat 7 3-D, which has box sides and NO pump. http://www.exped.com/usa/en/product-category/mats/synmat-3-d-7-mw
The box sides give you a bit more usable width. For inflation it comes with the yellow schnozzel, which is way, way easier to use...
I figured out that a tablet would be too small for my work and I bought a Dell Inspiron with an 11.6" screen. It's a bit heavy at 3.1 lbs but that's better than 5 lbs for a 15".
TWO MORE QUESTIONS:
1. WATERPROOF PROTECTION for the latpop. I found three possibilities:
--Aqua Quest Storm...
1) This is the only forum I frequent at this website.
2) I wanted people to know how much I appreciate what I've learned here, the great suggestions, and the goodwill and to say that this place is a cut above most internet forums.
3) What's wrong with thanking people?
4) I'm not responsible...
Scott, you make a very good point. If there is one thing that has made me a better person, it's being in the outdoors---the beauty of it, the challenge, overcoming fears, committing to living a larger life. There are a lot of things in my life that I would give up before the outdoors.
