    1200GSA maintainence costs?

If you can afford the bike, you probably can afford the maintenance costs :coffeedrink: Actually, you can do a lot of the basic maintenance stuff yourself. I'd go back to the dealer for work until the warranty expired, then start wrenching on my own. You can go to the BMWMOA website and find...

Tiffany Coates talks about adventure travel

So, I'm sitting here... staring at the computer screen. It's cold and snow covers the ground outside. I want to be somewhere warm. And then you put this video on! My poor Dakar sits in the garage connected to a battery tender. I go out and start it every couple of days. I'd take it for...

    Bike Suggestions

transalps There is a guy in one of the Carolinas that rebuilds Transalps, then sells them on Advrider.com. I think if you look through the past year's bike sales pages you can find him. From what i hear, he does outstanding work. Those bikes are workhorses and if taken care of properly...

February 24-27, 2011 - Dual Sport Desert Daze (Tucson, AZ)

Desert days in Feb? I would love to go, but don't think I can make it. The present temp in Spokane is 7 deg. F., and we just got 10" of new snow. Riding around in the desert sounds sooooo good right now. :bike_rider:

    Happy Holidays everyone!

LOL at your reply! The dogs bought me a Sargent seat this year. So they had to go out and buy the Missuz a new watch. The accompanying card even has their footprints on it. Glad to see someone else using the dogs as their support team. :coffeedrink:

    Dual sport specific magazine?

New Journal on it's way Having been a charter subscriber of Overland Journal, I have to say that I really like the fact that dualssporting appears to get more coverage with every issue. The only thing that ticks me off about it is that Brian DeArmon went out and bought himself a spanky new...

    Happy Holidays everyone!

I've had a wonderful year of riding, made lots of new friends, and didn't break anything major. It has been an incredible year for which I am humbly thankful. Here's wishing all of you a happy holiday season, and a new year full of joy! Ride safe, ride often! :bike_rider: Dale, the Old Fart

That Vstrom's been around! Let's see, San Juans, Bryce Canyon?, UP, cornfields of Iowa? What did I miss? At any rate, you've gone through a few rear tires I imagine. Congrats!

Two fun rides in June, 2011

If any of you are interest in dual sport bike rides next summer, here are a couple that will be lots of fun! The first one is up in BC. I've never attended it before, but met several at WestFestwho did it last year and said it was a great time...

    Recommendations for first dual-sport rig.

A little history I started riding the beginning of Oct., 2009, when I was 61 y.o. I bought a '02 F650GS Dakar for $4,100, spent ~$1,000 on riding gear, including a Nolan N103 helmet (you can probably do much better than that), Olympia Motosports neon yellow AST jacket and Ranger II pants...

    Buket List

Buy used For a first time training bike, I'd buy used if I were you. Several reasons; first you can save a lot of money over a new bike. Second, if you decide that you really don't like bikes, you can sell it and probably not lose out too much on the deal. third, You will drop it. So start...

The scariest thing on three wheels

Woody stopped by - yesterday and picked up a motorized bike I built a couple years ago. We talked bikes, M/Cs, and hacks. I brought up the Ural. He said he has had to rebuild a lot of Ural wheels because the rims aren't that great. Has anyone had that problem? Other than that, I haven't...

    Bikepacking? Motopacking?

a counter view... Giant Loop makes incredibly well built and well thought out gear. BUT... I just sold a Great Basin and Fandango setup. The Fandango was just too small for what I wanted on the tank. The Great Basin carried everything I needed (almost), but was a PITA at times. One has to...

Which bike would make a good "lifeboat" for a Unimog?

Klx250 Have you considered the KLX250? I believe that they are sold worldwide. so parts availability is great. People that I know who have them love 'em. I would stay away from 650 cc bikes; too big, too heavy for your stated needs.

The scariest thing on three wheels

Jimmy Buffet said it best, something to the effect of..."I'd rather die while I'm living, than live while I'm dead!" Hacks are starting to really look appealing, especially seeing that I want to take the Missuz with me more often.

Testing the F800 and 1200GSA BMW

Very interesting I'm running a F650GS Dakar, an '02 model with stock suspension. Really, really like the bike. But, am interested in what you think about the F800 and the 1200GS. I recently added a R1150RT to the garage so that I could take the boss lady out riding with me. I really don't...
