Lots of Questions
and I have lots of answers, but I would suggest that you start reading here: https://diplostrat.org/documents/ You will find articles and slide presentations on almost all aspects of building a lead acid battery system.
Basically:
-- You size your electrical system to your...
FWIW
Everyone differs a bit, but here are some real world numbers:
Two adults and one cat. Cold weather, heat on 24/7, refrigerator on 24/7. The biggest drain is the refrigerator, followed by the heat/hot water.
Heat from a Webasto Dual Top, cooking with True Induction and microwave. Assuming...
I would not be so fast to blame big brother - I like to breathe. I'm old enough to remember smog in the US and have been in Beijing recently enough for my eyes to water. And I was there at a good time. That said, I don't think that anyone really understood how dirty diesels are. The impact is...
Apples and Apples
The Malayan is Tiger's answer to all of the complaints about the older Tigers - no insulation, noisy heat, single pane windows, condensation, wooden construction, etc. Unlike the Bengal, the water system in the Malayan will not freeze. The difference in depreciation is the...
Andreas, nothing specific at the moment but a friend of ours has been transferred from Jeddah to San José, which makes us very focussed on the issues of ULSD.
Its Automatic
Two points:
-- Automatic switches are, well, automatic. Manual switches are easy to forget or require big tell tales.
-- A relay lets you place the manual control one place and the switch another, saving wire runs, etc. Putting a manual switch on the dash would require...
To be fair, there is no comparison between a 2006 CX and a 2013 Malayan - which is why, of course, that Tiger introduced the Malayan.
But I do so wish that the 2013 Chevrolet would take high sulphur diesel fuel. ;-(
This truck requires ULSD, the availability of which is a challenge. Europe and North Africa are easy; Central America, not so much. This truck has never been outside of the United States.
The options are either a gasoline engine (which, depending on where you are going may require removal of...
Shameless Bump of the day: 4x4 Goodies
Unlike many expedition vehicles, Ndeke Luka was designed to be driven on real Third World roads and tracks. And it doesn't do badly on motorways either.
-- Cognito front lift and steering reinforcement: Increases free wheel travel some 25%, greatly...
Denise and I deeply appreciate all of the kind words. We are very proud of our Tiger, it has all the features that we wanted some forty years ago, freezing/sweating our tails off in the back of various Blazers and Troopers!
We have been traveling overland for a long time and will be back to it...
Well, for four or five hours at least! ;-)
But yes, real A/C, no genset.
With new Tigers running six to eighteen months out, this is a great opportunity for someone who wants instant gratification.
Under 50,000 miles, excellent condition, Washington, DC, $175,000
A unique opportunity to own a unique vehicle. Extremely well equipped both as a motorhome and as a 4x4. This vehicle incorporates nearly everything that my wife and I have learned in forty years of overland travel in Africa and...
Nice!
Looks nice! Just to be annoying - where does the red wire on the left of the photo (the one that disappears into a split loom) go and how long is it? If over 18-24 inches, then it might be a good candidate for a fuse/breaker right at the positive terminal of the battery.
Looks Good!
Verkstad is correct; you don't need fuses or breakers for such short, safe runs.
Consider taking them out and making the runs from the positive terminals to the relay even shorter.
Nice work!
Clarifications
The advantage of certain Magnum inverter/chargers is that they are low frequency models with big iron laminations and good overload capacity. Most others are high frequency models - great for charging your computer but possibly less able to handle a microwave or air conditioner...
Looks good!
Wire gauge is not that hard, use this: http://www.calculator.net/voltage-drop-calculator.html?material=copper&wiresize=0.3224&voltage=14&phase=dc&noofconductor=1&distance=15&distanceunit=feet&eres=100&x=38&y=6
You can plug and play to your heart's content.
FWIW, I have had good...
I'm glad the material is helpful. Remember, all of this is for lead acid batteries only, lithiums are another question.
"Multi-stage" is somewhat true and somewhat merely marketing. Depending on your vehicle, it probably has very close to a multi-stage charger, depending on how the manufacturer...
Irrelevant. Your CTEK does not "see" the alternator. It merely creates a drain on the starter battery. When the SmartPass is closed, that drain can be up to 80A and when the SmartPass is open, then the drain is limited to about 20A, the capacity of the D250S. This current is used to charge the...
Had a '72 Blazer back in the day. Saw a lot of use in Africa and South America. There is a Facebook group dedicated to old Blazers.

Two comments:
-- A key controlled relay, a smart/intelligent/voltage sensing relay, and a manual switch are all isolators. Each has advantages/disadvantages. (The one to rule out is any form of diode isolator. Anything like this is a terrible idea...
