I am pretty sold on a 4x4 COE truck for my next rig, but even the smallest Fuso Canter's (~8000lb payload) seem like a bit too much truck for what I need/want. On the flipside, the HiAce JDM imports and similar trucks seem a bit too small (2000lb payload)

I've been living full time in a Subaru Outback with about 75 cubic feet of 'livable space' and, after 18 months, I am ready to upsize. I know a larger home will not get as good of gas mileage but there seems to be a gap in the market. I want to find something that is 4x4 and gets least 20mpg...
Every poptop I can find is barely taller than the cab (usually for a lofted bed with the top up) but then you cannot comfortably sit inside the camper with the top down. I am 6'3" and in a comfortable sitting position I am about 54". So with a truck bed depth of 20-22" I would need a nearly 3ft...
